So today I was trying to take the barrelled action off. All was going well until I got to the final screw. Apparently it was on quite tight, in my endeavor to get it out I stripped it. Once it was stripped I was not going to mess with it further so I just reassembled everything.

My question is should I just drill it out using an extraction bit and get a replacement screw at Ace Hardware, or is this something I should leave to a gunsmith?

If I am reading you correctly, what you are saying is you stripped the screw head and want to use an extraction bit to drill/bite into the center to remove the screw? If this is what you are saying then you must rely on what level of comfort you have and ensure your tools are in good condition and the extraction bit is good quality. If you cannot get it out via this method then I would recommend seeking out a smith or machinist to center drill the screw and remove the left overs so you can just throw a new screw in it and be done. Trying to repair the female threads of the receiver will cost way more than a properly equipped machinist/smith will charge to get it out right the first time.

The male hex head.

Also you may want to try driving a torx bit slightly oversized into the head if it is close and get it out that way. I have had fairly good luck with this method in the past, it all depends how hard the steel is of the screw.

If it is a hex head, get a bit that is over size. Take a file, and slowly remove metal from the flats, until you get a tight fit that you can tap into the head. Make sure the wrench fits into the bottom of the hex head and things are lined up before un-screwing.

It's possible someone (previous owner?) used red loctite or the screw is corroded in. You can try using some heat on the screw or letting a loosening agent soak over night.

That's a good idea about trying the Torx first. Next would be having a professional take over.

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread but this worked like a charm, thanks for the great advice!
