Here is a load for 300 Win mag using 208 grain Amax and H1000 powder. I shot 9 groups of 3 rounds starting with powder load of 73 and moving up .3 each group. At 74.5 grains the three shots measured under 7/8" at 200 yards. I seated the bullets .010 off the lands and measured every round from the ogive to 3.887. Firing on 9 targets with a shot on each target, then the second shot on each and then the third. For my TRG42, at 72 degrees and 3500 feet elevation, 74.5 gave good results. Thanks Chad for your advice!

LibertyMan,

Thanks for sharing your load data! I just bought a Trg42 300 Win Mag and will be loading the 208 Amax next week when my dies arrive. At the moment I have Alliant R22, but I would like to test the H1000. Do you by chance have and load data using R22?

Re: TRG 42 300 Win Mag load for 208 Amax

That is almost the same exact load I use in my Remington 700 PS. I load it .015 from the lands, and use 74.5 gr H1000. I get 3/4" groups at 100 yards using the 208's.

Also: WW brass, CCI mag rifle primers

By chance did you chronograph this load? If you did, what is the velocity?

Interesting...I'm at 78.5gr in WW super brass.

What brass are you guys using?

Re: TRG 42 300 Win Mag load for 208 Amax

I'm at 76gr H1000, 208 A-max (0.02" off lands), Win Brass, WLRM primer @ 2825fps.

78.5gr for me is compressed, I start to hear crunching at about 77.5gr.

Re: TRG 42 300 Win Mag load for 208 Amax

My current chamber uses 75.5gr H-1000 with moly, @ 2950.
My old SAMMI chamber used 78.6gr H-1000 with moly @ 2950.
Both used Win brass, WLRM primers, seated .002" off the lands.

Re: TRG 42 300 Win Mag load for 208 Amax

HOGTRG, I have not used R22. If you work up the load please post your results.

Ornery, I have no chronographed the rounds yet. If I do I will post.

Colt993, the load above was with once fired Federal Cartridge brass. I have new Lapua and Winchester brass but have not loaded them yet. I am looking forward to results the new brass will yield and will post.

I love the 300 Win Mag round really appreciate the TRG set up. It looks a little clunky and techno European, as if I need a Scandinavian accent to to be seen with it, but it is fantastic to shoot. Even with a southern drawl it works well for me.

Re: TRG 42 300 Win Mag load for 208 Amax

I received the new bushing from RCBS today. I'll try to seat some bullets with it and let you guys know if using a 7mm bushing works for the 208 Amax. If so I'll make a trip to the range next week to do some load development with my chronograph (will post results).

Thanks for all the feedback and load data!

Re: TRG 42 300 Win Mag load for 208 Amax

i just ladder tested the 208g Amax in my 300winmag today. Bat Action, Krieger barrel 1:10, McMillan Adj A3-5. CCI magnum 250 primers. Bullets seated 0.005 from the jam. Virgin winchester brass. Reloader 22 going from 71g to 74 in half grain increments. Groups were sub MOA from 71-72.5g, and opened up after that. But it was also 90 degrees outside with bad mirage. Something interesting I learned though: I had 3 fowlers loaded the exact same way, except with 70g of Reloader 22, and seated 0.100 from the jam. this group was TIGHT. I think the 208g AMAX likes some jump, atleast in my gun
