TRG-42 Trigger

I have owned several TRG-42's but have never experienced this before. After adjusting the trigger down to a comfortable pull, definitely on the lighter side of the 2 lb range, I have noticed that unless I operate the bolt very aggressively to the rear and then forward the trigger "loses" it's first stage completely and then requires about a 10 lb pull.

This does not happen if the adjustment is in the 3-4 lb range. If I operate the bolt too softly the first time and run into this problem and do not depress the trigger, operating it very aggressively the second time will stage the trigger correctly.

Any one else run into this?

there are some threads on this already. if you try to adjust the trigger to light, it doesnt work correctly.

ps i never touched the trigger on the trg i had. i thought it was perfect from the factory

You've made it too light. Start to bring up the pull weight until you no longer have the problem. I just make the first stage a bit heavier and then the apparent force of the second stage will be less. I had this problem when I first tried to adjust my TRG trigger, but bringing it back up until it resolved my cocking problems remedied it.

I'm not sure that I agree with this unless it's just characteristic of rifles produced in the last couple years. I had two previous to this one that did not exhibit the same condition at similar adjustments.

You just never adjusted your others low enough. The lower limit is there so if you adjust it below that point the factory feels it is no longer safe and the rifle will not remain cocked. The range is 2-4 lbs. If you get it lighter than 2 lbs it will not remain cocked.

As noted above, in my experience these triggers will either fail to cock or for some reason give the impression of a very heavy trigger pull. They " will" adjust down to a very light pull but become very erratic. Adjust the second stage until you can slam the bolt home ( on an empty chamber ) and it has the correct first/second stage feel to it, you'll be good . Just had this issue on a TRG22 that someone had tuned a bit light, would not cock on closing.

One more thing that may cause this is improper sequence in reassembling the rifle once you removed the trigger group. It slipped my mind until now, but it will give the heavy pull as well. Disassemble and reassemble IAW the manual and see if it clears it up.

There is a good thread on this somewhere on the Hide, but the big thing to keep in mind is that the first stage needs to be kept in proportion to the second stage. First stage needs to be roughly half the weight of the second stage.
