Currently running 308 on my TRG 22, but looking to get more distance (1000yds+). Also, at 1000+, I need to do more than punch paper at this distance. Ideally, I'd like enough energy at this distance to drop a hog.

Originally, I assumed upgrading to 338 LM would be the best option, but I've read some discussions on here that might suggest otherwise. However, I'm not sure if these discussions considered considered terminal balistics (i.e. "stopping power").

My main objective here is accuracy/distance with adequate stopping power at distance. Not concerned with ammo cost or barrel wear.

Advice?

Fortunately the large magazine of the TRG-22 allows you more room for a longer cartridge, well over 2.9" in fact. It sounds like you need a something with a rebated rim for max powder capacity like a .284Win.

If you want enough energy @ 1k to kill hogs, then you shoud go with the 338. You can get the TRG-42 in 300 WM and handload also, but you wounr get a standard short action ncaliber with a 308 boltface that will have enough energy to cleanly kill hogs. Just take a look on a ballistics program. Try using Barnes ttsx solids. They penentrate pretty well at longer ranges and still open up better than cup& core bullets at long range.
