I purchased a TT Special in the 2 stage flat shoe format to go on my PH3. I installed the trigger today and turned it up to be what I thought would be 3.5lbs without having a scale. After the adjustment, I'm when dry firing it wouldnt release the firing pin. Moved it a few clicks down on the second stage then it fired. I then bought a scale and checked everything, i adjusted the first stage to 1.5lbs and the 2nd stage tops out at 3lbs, a couple clicks up to try to get it to 3.5 and locks up. It also has a click and then the firing pin goes off after a brief pause. I dont have the click happening on my other 2 stage triggers that are in my ARs; one being the TT 3.5 Duty the other being a 4lb CMC. Is this normal for the TT Special?

I did shoot an email to TT a few days ago and have not received any feedback yet.

Since no one is replying, let me see if I can help.

The fundamentals of marksmanship are muzzle management and trigger finger discipline. Put the muzzle on the target, press the trigger in a manner that does not move the muzzle, and you will hit the target.

That's why most benchrest shooters use very light triggers, so light they would not be safe in the field. That's the role of the two-stage trigger. A first stage to make the rifle safe to use in the field, and a much lighter second stage for a release that does not disturb the muzzle.

What are you trying to accomplish? Most are seeking a heavier first stage for safety and a light second stage for accuracy. A 3.5-pound second stage is counterproductive. You might call TriggerTech, but I suspect their trigger is not designed for what you are trying to accomplish. You might be happier with a single stage or try a 3.5-pound first stage and a 1.5-pound second stage.

I hope that's helpful.

I think you’re right. It’s advertised as 8-24oz first stage and 8-32oz second stage. That’s .5-1.5lbs first and .5-2lb on the second. A total of 1-3.5

OP-looks like you are trying to adjust it to heavier than it’s capable of. So question, why are you using a good trigger if you are going to set it like a heavy crap trigger?

I was/am trying to get to 3.5lbs total or close for a hunting rifle which is within the triggers specs and even 3lbs would be close enough. It's the audible click from the trigger and hitch like it's hanging up on something that concerns me. The first stage is super smooth, then the first stage wall, when it breaks there is a audible click/hitch, brief pause, and then you can hear the firing pin release. The other two TT I have dont feel like that and dont have the click/hitch, they aren't from the same line though. The 2 stage cmc doesn't do that either. I'm seeking information from people that know better than me to see if I have a defective trigger or that is typical for the tt special line. My apologies for not being clear and concise in the original post.

Update:

Talk to the helpful people at TT via phone and told me the weight was adjusted a little heavy and to back off on the second stage. I backed both off and worked them up until it responded as expected. I ended up with roughly 18oz on the first stage and 20oz on the second for a little under 2.5lbs total, verified with a spring wheeler scale. Not quite the 3-3.5lb total pull I was hoping for but I guess I'll see what happens. Thank you gentlemen guiding me in the right direction.

Glad you got it working. Just curious, why did you want the heavier pull? I don't think I have a rifle that shoots over 2.5lbs.

Triggertech is going to warranty the trigger, unfortunately the are backordered until September is what they told me. Thank you everyone for your input.
wait...I don't get it...WTF are they going to warrant? You backed off trying to turn it into a heavy trigger and got it working just fine at a total of 2.5 lbs...and that's not good enough.

I quote @spife7980 (well, quoting TT really)

"So you are trying to drive this trigger to the absolute max that its advertised? And have you considered that not being able to do so may have something to so with the action you are putting it in?"

From TT:

"All pull weights and measurements are approximate. Pull weights of TriggerTech Triggers are directly impacted by firing pin spring weight.

But you do you...best of luck.

I'm assuming they are going to warranty it because it doesn't meet their spec and that it creates an issue whether or not the first or second stage is adjusted up to a certain point. I did put a single stage factory Bergara trigger in it and the trigger mechanism worked fine at 3lbs, but the stock interfered with the safety function. Then I put the trigger that came with the rifle back in it which is a single stage TT Primary. It worked fine, and for kicks, I adjusted it up to 4lbs just see what it would do. It worked as expected, then dialed it back down to 3lbs. I'm far from an expert but it doesn't seem to me that there is an issue with my particular action.

For me personally, I bought the gun to hunt with and wanted a 2 stage trigger vs the single stage that came with it. That particular trigger has 0 shots on it and already has what seems as unusual issue. I would be pissed if lined up on an animal and the trigger failed for whatever reason. I'm glad that they are willing to take care of it with no fuss, sucks they cant get one to me before September. I'm also not 100% sure I love the flat trigger for this particular rifle, so I'll probably buy another with a curved shoe and after some trial and error I'll sell one or stick it in another gun.
