Thanks to the help on this forum, I picked up a CED M2. I'm excited to use it.

I know literally zero about tripods, so what are you guys using with this thing ? I see Walmart sells them but they have a ton of them. Which one will work best for me ?

My shooting *should* allow this to be setup on concrete in front of me if I'm shooting off a bench.

I'd really like to buy at Walmart just to make my life easier.

If this topic has been beaten to death, please just post the link. My search fu is week but at least I know how fast it as going :)

Thanks.

Re: tripod for a CED M2

Buy the heaviest and cheapest camera tripod you can find.
The old ones are the best.
The range of adjustments makes it easier to get the screens lined up correctly and the weight holds it steady in the wind.

Good shooting

My tripod has a hook on the bottom of the center upright. In windy conditions I drive a stake in the ground and attach it by bunji cord to keep it from blowing over.

Ditto with the hook! Except I filled a grape juice jug with play sand that has a plastic carry handle and just put it on the hook. Never had it blow over.

Re: tripod for a CED M2

for my chrony I use a slik tripod with a pan/tilt head. as long as you have a tripod that has the adjustable height and weight support(most tripods off the shelf should support the weight of the chronograph you should be gtg

Re: tripod for a CED M2

I bought the best one they had at Wally World and it had the hook on the bottom which you can hang a weight on. We took the head off the tripod and use a large washer and rubber to tighten ours down on. You can use the legs to level it. At that the M2 is still a heavy unit and the tripod moves with the big mags. We are going to try to come up with a surveyors tripod and modify if we can find one at a reasonable price.

Re: tripod for a CED M2

Thanks for the replies guys. I love this forum. It saves me so much heartburn and BS.

I bough a $25 tripod from Walmart. It has a hook on the bottom where I could hang something heavy for the windy times in life. It has plastic ball bearing legs that appear as though it would be able to level it's self anywhere. It's adjustable out the ying yang so it should be good to go. It's a 58 inch tripod.

Targus-TGT-58TR-58 for $25 at Walmart

I walked around and tried to find some type of bag or something that was cheap that I could hang from it. Looks like I'll go with a 2 liter or something filly with sand/rocks and a rope. I like the bungee cord idea. I might go that route if my club doesn't have a problem with me literally putting a stake in the ground.

Also, if you lay prone, cut a 3/4" plywood about 12"x12" (or a little bigger). Drill a hole in the middle of it large enough for a screw to thread into the chrono base. I picked up a package of threaded screws at HD or Lowe's that are an inch long to connect the wood to the base. I use this to steady the chrono when shooting prone. It works great!

Re: tripod for a CED M2

I have a carbon fiber Rocketfish tripod for my CED. Works great, doesn't move in the wind and also supports my spotting scope without any problems. I got it a best Buy for $150.00 if I recall correctly.
