Re: Tripod for Spotting Scope

Far cry from $20. But I really like my Manfrotto.

Wow, nice setup there Scott!

In general, stability and light weight are conflicting goals when it comes to tripods. Everything about optical performace depends on support, stable platform = good image.

If weight is a factor, I would suggest you pick which one is more important to you before you even set your budget (weight vs. stability). But even then, like so many other choices with equipment, you are striving for a balance between cost, performance and features. Features can actually end up dictating whether you even drag equipment out or make do without it, if it's not user friendly.

I've seen mediocre tripods (good wooden survey ones way past their prime) made to be very stable (at a very low cost) simply by draping a large chunk of chain through the legs. So you can get good performance with cheap tripods if add weight and treat them with great care and handling. If usability is important and you can spend a couple hundred clams, you can be much more choosey about what you look for and settle on.

It's probably just me, but I tend to err on the side of over analyzing almost everything, depending on who you ask!

I like like this setup. Manfrotto gear is the gold standard of quality, can't go wrong.

The Slik medium I got from platypus here on the Hide is golden but I think his wife does all the work and he gets all the glory

Danel told me to get the medium but I got the mini first order. The medium gets as low as the mini for prone but is way more stable using a heavy spotting scope plus extends up so I can spot darn near standing. A few coins over $100.

I tried a Vanguard for around $25 that was about the same profile as the Slik medium, while it worked, it lacked adjustment and was not as compact.

Good luck

Re: Tripod for Spotting Scope

I have a Ewing Sniper Tactical Tripod that's about 3 or 4 years old. I do prone and bench shooting. I use a Leupold Mark 4 for a spotting scope. Really like the option of being able to set up really low with the Ewing. A hunter friend likes to borrow it and he really like it because it's so light, compact and works well on uneven ground. (I don't hump around the woods much like I used to.) It's also pretty rugged and high quality.

The website is www.SniperScopeStand.com. Good luck.

Re: Tripod for Spotting Scope

I just placed an order here, though it is not under $100:

I wanted something lighter and smaller to put in the drag bag outside pocket yet still very sturdy and usable.

Mr. Ewing just released a new variant that uses a 3/4" rod that goes thru the base rather than screwing to the base, making it easier to break the setup down.

Mine is a hybrid of sorts - the 1" 9 1/2" rods (4 of them), the current "sniper" base, and the HP head so it has some lateral extension away from the rod and can be operated one handed. The base and rods are tacticool green.

Do some reading on his site - he's SOCOM approved and jump approved. Good stuff and a nice guy to boot.
