I'm looking to upgrade my tripod for night hunting and am getting lost in the weeds on all the options. Use is for night hunting only, no comp shooting. Needs to be able to support up to a M110ish clone with a PVS-27 on it. Everything else I hunt with is lighter than that. My current tripod is a Slik D700 with the old school Pan/tilt 2 lever head wearing a Triclawps saddle - major budget rig. This is the only tripod I have any experience with. I actually don't have any complaints about its performance and for what I paid for it ($170 with saddle) its been completely awesome, but its pretty big when collapsed and well over 7 lbs and I don't like the head on it at all.

What does The Hide say would fit the following requirements best?

1. I want carbon fiber with as small a footprint (when folded up) as possible while still doing its job as a shooting platform. Size matters more to me than weight, but light weight is pretty nice also. I do most of my hunting with my father who is now 70, so I expect I'm going to also be carrying his gear for him alot more going forward for as long as he can hunt.

2. I'm open to head suggestions but leaning towards a standard ball head. Seems like everyone likes the Anvil-30 as THE standard, but I don't like that it doesn't pan separately. I am also not ready to spend RRS money on this, see #3 below.

3. Looking for a mid-grade quality option. I'm not willing to spend RRS prices for a hunting rig. $500 total budget would be about right. A Two Vets at $600 plus $200 head would not be out of the question if its THE way to go based on specs, but that would really be a stretch. I'm pretty confident I can get something that would meet my needs for way less, like maybe a leophoto.

I saw this tripod below and was amazed that it collapses to 18" under 4 lbs. That form factor would really be nice for hunting, but is it going to suck at everything else? Also I know from another thread I read that this is likely a rebranded Innorell that can be had for even cheaper. Does anyone know if there is a mid-grade option somewhere that would have size/weight specs similar to this thing? But maybe a bit more solid, and more quality?

I got a used Vortex Radian carbon fiber tripod + ball head for $600 in PX. Maybe keep an eye out for a nice quality pre-owned tripod?

Or, you could a get a cheaper Vortex tripod and pair 'em with an RRS BH-30.

I don’t have a lot of experience with different tripod brands and haven’t owned anything high-end but this is what use. It’s very light and compact and stable enough for shooting coyotes at a couple hundred yards. It looks similar to the one you linked.

Someone with more experience can probably give you more perspective on the stability difference between this and a $500+ rig.

I have this for sale in the px. About $200 under what it normally cost and would be great for your use. It’s brand new unused. Let me know if your interested.

Dang thats a good price, but I'm looking for something that is a little shorter folded up. Trying to get as close to 20" as I can, which means 4 piece legs.

I've used TwoVets and Leofoto. Now I have RRS. There is honestly no comparison. The Leofoto is fine for a spotter but shooting off of them isn't ideal. Side by side, it is honestly staggering how much more wobbly the Leofoto is compared to the RRS. I would get a TwoVets over the Leofoto. But honestly, RRS is worth it.

FWIW, I’ve been using the leofoto daily for the last 2 months and have had no issues with it. Works great for me. The only problem I had was the tensioning knob for the arca/pic tightness moved pretty easily. Set it to where I needed it and put some blue loctite and it’s been fine since. Paired with the coletac tripod sling.

This was my first tripod https://www.nightgoggles.com/shop/s.../night-stalker-pro-shooting-tripod-ball-head/ before eventually upgrading to a RRS with Anvil 30 head. I was very happy with it but didn't really know what I was missing until I got the RRS setup. It is lighter with less wobble or flex. The Night Goggles does collapse a little smaller and comes with spike feet vs the RRS you have to buy them separately.

The 2vets above linked is a solid price.

The vortex radian carbon is what I shoot but it's gonna be less packable than you want. Their switchback is, frankly, a knockoff of RRS at lower price/lot less nice. But it fills your reqs.

Those who say that rrs is tops aren't wrong. I'll eventually get one and relegate my radian to backup and/or spotting.

I have a BOG death grip. It is a tremendous value, however, it is too short for me while standing (I'm just over 6'2").
My work rig is a pig saddle set up. It's an awesome piece of kit.
I put together an ultra lite carbon fiber tripod with a cheesy injection molded clamp that I modified. Very lightweight, supports my 9# plus rifle without issue, but I can't testify to its robustness.

PIG and HOG saddles (I used to run a HOG) were pretty good til Crux came along with a dual screw clamp (for guns that had tapered or differing cross sections). Unfortunately, Crux is gone now but I still have their clamp. If you can find one, you will absolutely toss your pig saddle.

I've mostly gone to arca for tripod attachment but I still have two rigs that need the clamp when I play with them.
