I am looking for a reasonably priced saddle that I can attach to my tripod as a rest for my rifle at competitions. I saw the hog saddle but it is very pricy. Suggestions are appreciated.

Re: Tripod rifle rest help

One of the "advantages" of the Hog Saddle (and similar products) is the ability to clamp the rifle down into the cradle. If you don't need that ability, but are instead just looking for a "rest" to attach to your tripod, then I'd suggest looking no further than the Hide's own Danel Jenkins (a.k.a. - Platypus) and his "Precision Rifle Solutions" tripods and cradles.

I have used both the small and medium tripods extensively and I highly recommend his tripods and cradles. Just pick the cradle that best suits your particular rifles (SSP-1 is the more narrow cradle for use with the HS Precision/PSS stocks, McM A1, A2, A3, etc. stocks while the SSP-2 is the wider cradle for stocks like the A5, Manners T4/T5, TRG, etc.). I generally recommend that folks go with the wider cradle as it offers a bit more flexibility should your needs change and you want/need more width to accommodate a wider forend/handguard.

Give Danel a call or an e-mail, tell him what you are looking for, and he'll help you find the product that will best suit your needs.

Re: Tripod rifle rest help

I built my own and it worked quite well in a competition I shot recently.

I think it cost me around $15 it doesn't clamp the rifle in but that can be an advantage in some competitions. I merely bought a 3" ABS plastic pipe coupler cut it in half cut out a hole that would fit a nut I had found that fit onto my tripods threads then epoxied the nut in place and covered the inside of the rest with foam from an old camp pad. I then duck taped it all in place.

Re: Tripod rifle rest help

I take my PRS to every match I go to and it's excellent gear. You honestly are getting a lot for your money with the PRS tripod and cradle.

Here's a vid I took at PMG earlier this year where my partner and I used our large PRS tripods and SSP1s as a rear "shooting stick" on barricades and as a sitting position rifle rest on the same stage.

Great use of the tripod Black-X. You are nice and smooth with that sucker. Any training tips you have for us on how to improve w/ the tripod? I have a PRS tripod, but have never seen it used with the speed you used yours at....
