I have been on the hunt for a rifle range where I can wring out my CZ 455. I just called the Eau Claire National rifle club, since they have 600 yards, and they said high power only. Does anyone know where I can go to shoot longer ranges near Colfax, WI? I am looking for more than 300 yards as I have 300 yards at the house.

Re: Trouble finding a rifle range

Can I assume you're 455 is in .17? I had my 452 (.22LR)on steel at 300 last weekend and that was really stretching it. I couldn't imagine getting it out much past that.

Re: Trouble finding a rifle range

Go talk with some farmers - offer a little cash and
explain it's only a .22 - one has to have a tractor lane
they are willing to let you use - Ham and brandy work
also.

Re: Trouble finding a rifle range

Hell, I had trouble finding a range in Dallas that would let me shoot my .22 at 100 yards last week! They were worried that I would shoot the targets next to mine. What a joke.

Re: Trouble finding a rifle range

It is a 22LR. I have been shooting at my 3.5" steel swinger at 285 yards and doing quite well. I just have to try the longer ranges. A friend of mine wants me to so Prairie Dogging with him and I want to find out how far I can reach out. I am pretty sure I could hit them at 400 yards without much trouble.

Re: Trouble finding a rifle range

I am going to stick my foot in it. You don't need to try to kill a PD past 300yds with a 22lr. Even a rat deserves a quick death. So you have been doing "quite well" at 285 on a 3.5" steel target, good for you. If your intention is to sling lead at animals until you hit one beyond the useful accuracy and killing power of a cartridge then I wish you failure in your pursuit of a place to plan your ill informed madness.

Re: Trouble finding a rifle range

I can get 10 out of 10 on that steel at 285 yards if the wind is not gusting. If I can keep my group size inside the kill zone at a given range, then I will hunt at that range. I used to hunt with airguns before I had a .22. If I can drop a groundhog at 50 yards with a 12 ft/lb airgun then I had better be able to drop a prairie dog at 300 yards with 52 ft/lbs. And those 52 ft/lbs are what is left at that range, not muzzle energy. If I can hit a small soup can, why wouldn't I be able to hit a prairie dog?

Re: Trouble finding a rifle range

Isaac, i have enuf experience to know that you're probably gonna get maybe 20% 1st connection kills at that range with a 22. Now, the ranches i hunt want every 1 exterminated so i figure if i hit them with a 22 that's probably a better death than they will get from poison that makes them bleed to death very slowly, so i shoot at them regardless of range.

Re: Trouble finding a rifle range

Winnequah Gun Club in Lodi, WI has a range where I can shoot 300 yards with my .22 LR. You would have to join the club before you could do any shooting, so I don't know if that solves your problem.
