Hey Guys , WELL im at a cross roads again ,

Looking at my 1st custom and gunsmith wants to charge 300.00 to true up 700 action and bolt work with a added 125.00 to install seko extractor . ( not really sure about this smith also but he,s the ONLY one close to where im at now )

OR

Buy a Stiller Predator action 850.00( with no wait and know its right ) and have a m24 barrel fitted .

OR

Fit non trued action and new Barrel and see how it shoots

I know its a crap shoot just changing barrel but this is where im at , driving me nuts

Thx All, Phil

Re: True or Not

300 is a little high, but not terribly so.
The Sako extractor is not really any better than the stock remington extractor.
If I were to install a new extractor, it would be an M-16 style.

FWIW, Louisiana Precision charges 250 for truing the action AND bolt, so the price seems reasonable.

Once again, Louisiana Precision would charge you a TOTAL of 880 dollars, this is action truing, new barrel and chambering, crowning etc...

The stilller action alone is nearly that.

I am in no way affiliated with them, I only use them as an example since they are also in La.

Re: True or Not

yup yup thats a 10-4 on the m16 extractor , thats what PTG bolts have

Truing my 700 still would never meet stillers specs
They use the PTG bolt too,

Can anyone out there give use some insight of actions compared to a trued 700 vs Stiller ?

Re: True or Not

I will ask a few questions that my smith asked me:
1. How accurate does it NEED to be. What are we doing? Shooting 2MOA steel? Shooting 1/4moa targets? What I decided was that a 1moa rifle was all I needed. So, I trued up my Remington 700. Was it the best choice? Hell yes it was. My rifle does EVERYTHING I need it to do.

If you need to hit 1/4 moa targets (just as a good comparison of accuracy), then upgrade and spend whatever you need to to get the most dead nutz rifle available.

2. How are you shooting the rifle? Prone, bi-pod, sitting, kneeling, standing, unsupported? If these are the majority of trigger time, the amount of accuracy you gain from a Stiller is offset by unsteady positions.

You shooting out of a big vise off a bench? You could justify the Stiller as the "human error" is reduced due extra accessories to hold the rifle.

3. Not a doubt in my mind: Do the M-16 extractor and don't look back.

As for cost: If you can get a local guy to do the smithing, you are saving freight both ways. My freight cost me around $75.00 USPS (both ways combined). So that is another figure to look at. I would not put money into a custom barrel and NOT true the action and lugs.

Rocketman has it right, you can NOT go wrong with a Stiller. But you may not need it. For me, a custom action would have been a luxory I could not afford at the time.

Re: True or Not

I feel a majority of the accuracy lies in the barrel with about 5-10% in the action.

In the remmington I built I had the lathe and did everthing myslef. I was very happy with a factory action.

Tig weld the bolt handle or PTG
