alright i just got a remmy 700 sps tactical 308 for xmas from my gf, i wanted to have the action trued so i called a smith and was told that if they trued the action and barrel on a factory rifle it would cause damage to the chamber, is this true? why can you not true up a factory barrel and action?

Re: trueing question

the action can be trued but the barrel will have to be set back and chamber will have to be cut deeper. Basically cut current threads off barrel and start over.

Re: trueing question

part of the truing process is to true the threads in the action that mate with the barrel. to do this the threads have to be opened up and current threads on barrel won't fit not so must rethread barrel.

Re: trueing question

DeadNois my 2 cents is shoot it till you need to rebarrel and then at that time have the action trued along with the rebarrel.

How does it shoot now?

My take is that there are many things that as a whole contribute to an accurate rifle but somtimes doing bits and pieces here and there wont yield as dramatic results as having a major overhaul performed. Yes a square action is important but so is a good barrel and they compliment each other very well

Re: trueing question

like mentioned already, fully truing the action will include opening up the receiver threads to ensure they are centered/square to the bore, round and a true form. the factory barrel threads will no longer properly fit this new oversized receiver thread.

personally, i feel any potential gain from truing a receiver and setting back a factory barrel is no where near worth the time/cost involved. my advice is to shoot what you have now until you are ready to have an aftermarket barrel installed. at that time having the action trued up makes much more sense.
