Think he is telling the Tallies “Either you give it to us and we pay for it, or we just take it. Your choice. “??

I think it’s a good idea. It would be such a stark contrast from how Biden screwed us over. We’d get at least a sliver of dignity back.
This time around, we'd probably do well to NOT hoist Rainbow flags anywhere, like the State Department did over the US Embassy under the last "administration". I have a feeling that WON'T be happening this time.

This is got me thinking about exactly what would it take to forcibly liberate Bagram. Let’s take guesses.

I vote a first wave of fast movers hitting any AA installations, followed by 3 specter gunships, parachute in a couple A- teams and then 200 rangers. Toss in 2 Apache’s if you can get them there. Secure the airfield first and the rest at their leisure.

What ever happened to "Speak softly and carry a big stick"?

Not seeing the charm...

I failed to see the charm in killing 13 service members, abandoning several billion dollars in equipment and leaving thousands of US citizens and people who helped us to die.

But then again, I'm not democrat.

You’ll have to settle for Ghostrider. The last Spectre retired about 10 years ago.

I am literally an SME on what you are talking about.

Airfield would be operational and you would have the base quasi secured and posts manned to repel counterattacks much, much faster than anyone here would guess unless they were Rangers or certain SOF elements prior.

So we spent 20 years invading and occupying Afghanistan
(like every self respecting empire tries to do)

Once we ran out of money and blood to spend, we left in a nice big mess with the country a fair bit worse off than before and of course the same folks back in power.

Now apparently Trump thinks "We deserve" their country again and he wants them to just hand us a military base or else?

Remember we spent 20+ years occupying their country, killing their freedom fighters and such and they won by not backing down and being willing to spend more blood than us. Why would they ever want to agree to the same foreign invaders being invited back again?

Trump (and many jingoists in the USA) are truly delusional in their ideas.

The Taliban should just tell Trump to go pound sand and sure if you want to come grab it, we can't stop you, but good luck holding it...
Especially now that the USA has essentially started a not so cold war with Russia and is gearing up for a war with China, I'll bet both would be happy to help return the favour...

I guess Trump thinks he is the god emperor of the world and can just go invade, or take whatever he wants from any other country.

Perhaps the Taliban should just print a bunch of copies of the Epstien list and leave them all over the area and then magically it would stop being of any interest to Trump...

How dare you question the divine leader!

First knees.

I am generally with you. I would make an exception for Bagram. Until you stand on the ground there you don't get it.
You are correct that I have never stood in Afghanistan. I have spent plenty of time in Kuwait and Iraq from Desert Storm through OIF. The entire region is a shit hole not worth American lives or money.

Fair enough. I just don't agree about Bagram.
Respectfully, why? Scenery? Got photos?

Runways can handle literally anything US mil.

It is 1 hr from China's nuke center.

You can project strike power anywhere in China or Russia from that base.

It is endlessly defensible. If I want to keep it, you will not take it from me almost no matter what.

It has ramp space. This is underrated by most people. During the withdrawal, the amount of C17 and C5s parked there all at the same time was mind blowing.

Without going into details, was I close? I have no military experience.

We do not need to occupy an air base in a shit hole. We need to stop the endless wars.
I agree about not getting into endless wars. But even a kid in a nerf war know better than to give up the tree house to the enemy.

If we can get it back, it’s a “YUGE” asset in projecting military power on that side of the world. I think it’s worth it, and a presence there might even make Afghanistan a little less comfortable for the terrorists.

Also, if there are any allies that got abandoned there that are still alive, it would give them a possible path out.

No direct knowledge of this but werent the Chinese courting them after we left?

Your plan is good but not what would be executed. I don't really want to say timelines I have seen airfield seizures accomplished in as it would probably be unwise even though they are technically unclassified.

I can say it would blow your fucking mind.

Trump should make them an offer for use. It would not be the first country we pay for airbase use. Once we are a "renter" we can resist eviction if/when necessary.
If we invade, then we have to defend it from day one and that is most likely costlier than renting for as long as possible.

And the mountains, at least in the snow, are a sight. I can see how it might grow on you.

You want to pay the Taliban more than we have already?

What is hard to convey is just the scale of the place. It was made to project regional power for a sustained peer conflict. It is survivable. It is defensible. It is a logistics hub for air power like no other I have seen.

Big AMC bases like McChord or Pope look small in comparison. It had and probably still has jet fuel storage for literally a fucking extended campaign. All bunkered and shielded. Waste disposal. Fighting positions everywhere. Complex ECP setups. Everything.

To illustrate the logistics hub that was,

You could stage, kit up, and drop about half of the paratroopers we dropped on D-Day just from that one base. And you could drop them on Beijing or Moscow, and our adversaries know it.

The only base I have seen that rivals it is Hickam AFB in Hawaii.

Would be way better if Trump got it back via diplomacy. I think he could pull that off too, and it would add some more political influence in the area.

I sat there in 2019 with a 240 and a cup of coffee watching F16s and Apaches do alternating bomb and gun runs on the suicide bombers who had hard pointed after their failed attack on the base initiated by a 2500 lb VBIED.

It was the most beautiful and snowy winter day and the fuckers attacked right before dawn. So big bang, tracers everywhere, and then coffee and a live show of American air power killing Muslims as the sun rose in the east.

It was awesome.

And Joe gave it away along with a fortune in gear.

That's what I heard from other trustworthy sources. It still pains me to remember than some demented grifter gave that away for nothing. If he had at least tried to get his 10% in a deal that would have gotten US 90%.

this right here. what on earth do we need it back for? a war with India? Iran? current admin get a woodie? another unnecessary foreign base we don't have any need of.
the way we left was,IMHO,treason which should have yielded several executions, starting at the top. another unpunished profit center for the MIC. gotta replace the stuff so we can send it to Ukraine. i always thought that some in prev admins wanted a chance to arm the goat fuckers with the good stuff. you know, help out their Muslim bros. Taliban could also get some cash from the cartels-which has happened.
the question is why did we invade in the 1st place? the usual spread democracy from the shinning light on the hill,MIC profits,a lot of additional stars for incompetent generals, neo cons touching themselves down below? oh yea,get Ben Laden that was a success IN PAKISTAN. BTW,as a side note,i don't believe the Obama narrative on OBL for 1 minute.
great side effects of taking it back are we can go deeper into debt farther, make some more MIC profits, distract from Epstein and get some more of our troops killed. the Taliban didn't take it,we gave it to them.

Trump is right about Greenland and of course the Panama Canal...
hate it but on the canal i agree with the neocons. we very much need to occupy and control the canal. we need to try and get China out of the w.hemis without a war with them. gonna be likely impossible. the plan for Taiwan,so. China sea re China is a bitch of a problem. maybe some kind of quid pro quo on those. very likely a truly crazy idea i know.
