Range Report trying to build a new gun but cant decide

Re: trying to build a new gun but cant decide

I have heard good things about the 7wsm. I have a 300wsm in a Browning A-Bolt and like it a lot. You might try calling my cousin Jon Beanland. He is also builds guns and has built several of the 7wsm's. He would be happy to talk with you.

The 7WSM will have a longer effective range with the 168 and/or 180 VLD than the 300WSM. These 7mm higher BC bullets can be pushed faster than the lower BC bullets of same weight in the 300WSM. But barrel life will be reduced some. It's a give and take.

You'll get a better b.c. using the 7's. You'll have more avalible energy downrange to ring that steel and at 1000 yds or better, the louder it rings, the better off you are. When looking at JBM don't use equall velocities. The 7 will push its lighter bullets faster. You should be able to get the 162's zinging.

Shooting comp is about a lot more than energy.

The rifle and shooter must be able to perform in repetition, and a lot of it, whether shooting for score or for training. This is where the magnums fall short. They generate too much barrel heat and wear, and fatigue the shooter to an unnecessarily harsh extent.

For 6mm, the largest chambering I'd shoot would be either a .243 Win, 6BRX, or a 6XC. For 6.5mm a .260 rem, for 7mm a 280 Rem, and for .30cal a .30-'06. All of these will ring steel very convincingly out to 1Kyd and beyond.

More than these I'd consider neither necessary nor advisable.

Magnums are in their proper element when irresistable terminal energy needs to be delivered. The smaller chamberings do better when the primary goal is shot placement.
