Trying to decide on a Remington 700 model

I'm new to shooting, although I have plenty of experience plinking with airsoft guns. I've done some basic research, and I think I want to purchase some model of Remington 700 just because I like how they look and I've heard good things about them. Based on the fact that I want the rifle to be chambered in .223 and I don't like the look of wood, I've narrowed it down to the following options:

XCR Tactical Long Range
VS SF II
VTR
SPS
SPS Stainless
SPS Varmint
SPS Tactical

How do I decide between them? Price isn't much of an issue. I really like the look of the VS SF II and it has a long 26" fluted barrel, so that's the one I'm leaning towards now, but it's not really an educated decision yet. What should I know before making the final decision?

What type of shooting do you plan on doing? Longer range, varmint, 100-300 target.

26" bbl's are nice in that they get the bullet up in velocity, but it can be cumbersome to lug around. If you will just case it up and take it to the range, then not an issue.

The VS Sf is 1:12 so you wont do so well with heavy bullets, so on a good day you can reach out to 500Y but be a slave to wind.

I have the sps-V and good to go up to 300Y, but if I did it again I would go SPS-T 1:9

This will be for target shooting at 200 yards.

I don't actually understand what the 1:12 twist effectively means. Can you explain that?

My vote is VSSF II. I got mine in trade and love it! Grouped a .684 in the bullseye my first time out with it at 100 yards after sight in. I originally didn't like the stainless, but now I really do.

Thanks! Here is a shot of that target I mentioned.

The scope is a Leupold Vari-x III 6.5-20x40. From what I understand it is an older model. I found it to be pretty clear glass.

Re: Trying to decide on a Remington 700 model

i have the varmit 26" heavy barrel .850" at muzzle if i remeber (factory), pos millett scope, federal gold medal match ammo 168/175grn, factory stock, and she shoots .5" groups all day. you can be into the varmit for about 600$ out the door tax, FFL fee and what not. mine is .308 and i bought the varmit to get thee velocity up another 200fps or so, which can make a big diff shooting longer range.

i have a B&C bedded stock i bought on here in transit i paid a tad over $100 for it which is half off midway. And now i am looking at a XLR chassis for it $780 ish, then send action off for trueing and rebarreling. so down the road i will have a R700 that will run with any other .308(give or take) for less than 2k$.

just think the more you are in the gun to start the more total $$ in the end it will add up to. You can normally find R700 Varmits on local gun trader sites, as i did.

hope it helps

1:12 twist means it takes the bullet 12" to rotate 1 full rotation.

Re: Trying to decide on a Remington 700 model

I get that, but what effect does that have in shooting? The XCR Tactical Long Range also has a 26" barrel, but has a 9" twist. What would be the differences between shooting the two of them?

The faster rate like 1:9 compared to 1:12 will allow you to shoot a heavier bullet.. this would be important in a 223 because at longer distances, the wind can really push a 223 around...the heavier bullet would help minimize the drift.
