Trying to decide on GAP possibilities

It started out pretty simple...get Gap to put a Bartlein .260 barrel on my 700 action and bed it in my Manners stock with my HS DBM assembly. Then I figure out that I might need to load up some long bullets that won't fit the HS mag. OK, now I'm gonna need a Badger DBM assembly. So, that leaves me with a stock, action, and trigger to contribute to the project. Then I start looking real hard at the Templar actions, and start thinking about selling my barrel/action, and sending GAP my stock and trigger. Then I realize after talking to Karey at GAP that I'm just a few bucks away from a complete Non-Typical build.

So, the only thing I'm sure about now is the .260 caliber!

Thanks for any advice or opinions?

Go with a full build. Since you said it yourself that dollar wise your close to a full build. You might as well kick in the remaining amount and go all the way.

Re: Trying to decide on GAP possibilities

this is what I do all the time. I plan for a long time on what I want to do with a stock rifle, talk to the builders and then get carried away and end up with something different then I started with. No problem with what you are doing because in the end of the day you end up with a brand new GAP rifle.

I can tell for resale value having a full build is worth more. It is hard to use a stock Remmie and have it tuned by some of the major smiths and ever get your money out of it is you want resale it.

Re: Trying to decide on GAP possibilities

I'm kind of in the same boat. I've got the new hunting gun itch pretty bad and have it narrowed down to gap 7mm wsm nontypical or having a local smith build me a 7mm tejas.

You can't go wrong with the gap for sure. I love my 260 crusader-most accurate gun I own hands down.

Resale on them is great too if you ever find yourself in a pinch. There is a lot of demand.

Re: Trying to decide on GAP possibilities

I did the same thing basically, I have .308 remington 700P that shoots really well. Back in Feb. I wanted to upgrade the factory stock so, I call manners and order a T5A. I wait 12 weeks and right before I receive the stock I talk myself into ordering a new krieger barrel and badger bottom metal.

I find out the barrel is going to be a five month wait, so I am waiting patiently and about six weeks before delivery I start thinking there is no reason to tear down a gun that shoots really well for a $400 dollar action. So I call up Surgeon and get a 591. Of course now a need a new trigger as I am building a rifle from the ground up, so I ordered a Timney.

I finally received all my parts back around the beginning of November. I looked at and talked with several gunsmiths and sent my parts off around Thanksgiving. Now I am patiently waiting to receive it back.

The bottom line is I love my 700P but, now I have a rifle to shoot while my custom gun is being built. The barrel of my 700P still has plenty of life left in it so I just didn't see the point of breaking the gun down, when I could spend a little more and get what I really wanted.

As with everything in life don't spend money you don't have, if your budget allows, go for the custom rifle, if it doesn't build up what you have or save a little bit longer. Either way I think you'll be happy with the final product. I know I'm glad that I got to select each component in my new gun, and when it arrives I will be extremely happy.

Re: Trying to decide on GAP possibilities

Thanks for the replies.
Now I'm thinking 2 guns....a #3 Bartlein .243 on my action, dropped in my Manners SL stock, and a full build .260 in one of the heavy barrel configurations, and have it bedded into my Manners T stock.
The delivery dates should be a few months apart and I've already got NF glass for both, so the $$ part should be spread out and a little more bearable.
The wait will be the tough part.
