Ok, so bare with me here. I know the 10 series is a short action and the 110 is the long action. My question here is about the other lines, like the 14/114, 16/116, 11/111 and 12/112 I am guessing that one is a short the other is a long action. But, is it the same action but on a diffrent model of rifle? I know remington uses the 700 LA and SA on a multitude of diffrent rifles, all meant with specific needs. I.E. PSS, 700P, Alaskan, XCR and so on. Is it the same idea? Or is one line a completly diffrent action?
Reason I ask is I am planning to do a build on a budget, nothing super-spectacular. I wish to use a short action, probably off a donor, and theres a few things I want to understand before any coin is dropped. The accessories that will be used are either a Choate tactical or B&C stock, 20 moa base, and probably a Bushnell 3200 mil/mil. Other items like a stock pack, sling and such will all be included. If the action were to come with a varmint barrel then that saves some work. Caliber will be something common like .308, or .243. I plan to have it done within the next year since it will be a gift to a friend coming back from service overseas.

Re: Trying to inderstand Savage rifle models.

If I inderstand right the 2 digit models are short and 3 digit models are long. Also if I inderstand right there are 2 types of actions. Target and standard. Standard is everything from a Stevens to a 10FP. Target actions are the single shot models

and to make it more confusing the numbers used to be for the finish of the action. but there are some that have blued and stainless in the same line. 1 is a short action. 11 is a long. if you want a bare action then try jim at northland. if you are going to buy stuff, here is a tip that will help you out. savageshooters.com and join for $12 bucks. then you can get at the classifieds and i hear they are rich with savage stuff. anyway, model 10s are nice but as with anything, slap a tactical on it and raise the price. but you do get a few nice stock choices. so there you go. i think the varmint series would have something thats a good base, but if you start buying this and selling off that, look at a stevens for sale online or at a sporting goods store for $200 and there you go. or call jim, he is on the savage shooter forum towards the bottom. he has match barrels ready to go.

dude, there is a group buy on a savage with a 5R barrel going on as well as other used savages.

Re: Trying to inderstand Savage rifle models.

it's really not that complicated... with the exception of the 25 and 40 series... all Savage centerfires are basically the same action, the model numbers are option codes, stocks, triggers, finish, etc. The only 2 real differences are short action or long action and single shot or repeater.

Re: Trying to inderstand Savage rifle models.

The 14/114 models are from the "Classic" series. Wood stocks and blued metal. The 16/116 are from the "Weather Warrior" series. Stainless actions and barrels. The 11/111 are from the "Hunter" series. A variety of stock options; all blued metal, I think. The model 12 is from the "Predator" and "Varmint" series. Some are blued, some are stainless. Some can be had with dual port, or left port on a right-handed action. Could be wrong, but I don't think there is a 112.

More stock makers are inletting stocks for Savage actions. But I think there's a problem with Savage changing the spec's frequently. Action screw spacing can vary between models or years. And actions with accutriggers won't fit a stock inlet for older, pre-accutrigger stocks. As much as I love Savage, I must admit, a Remington 700 from 1970 is pretty much the same as a 700 from 2010 (at least with respect to inletting).

Academy Sports sells Stevens short actions for $240-250 and $220 if you catch them on sale. I got mine for $220!

Re: Trying to inderstand Savage rifle models.

Older actions are simple, long or short. Now they introduced a different feed mechanism (centerfeed versus stagger) and the hole spacing for the action screws is different.

There is a 112, I have a FV112 I'm buiding up. They were long actions with short action cartridges.
