Turning and/or fluting an existing barrel?

What if any accuracy problems are there from turning down or fluting an existing barrel, meaning one on a rifle with some rounds through it? Will taking the profile down affect accuracy, harmonics or any other aspect of integrity and function? Thanks.

Re: Turning and/or fluting an existing barrel?

I've been told profiling an already finished barrel can be a crap shoot...might not effect it, or might. Profiling, or lathe turning, can introduce stresses into the barrel that it won't normally experience and there's a good chance the barrel will react to those stresses, and not in a good way. Fluting is less of a risk since it's done lengthwise and really doesn't introduce any unusual stress, although it may relieve some which could effect accuracy.

Yes you can do either if done correctly. I would not recommend a high speed or hogging done cause the extra heat that it creates will cause heat and stress issue in the barrel. But i have done both to already done barrels and it did not effect the peformance of them. As long as they are done corectly you will have no problems.
