So Cal
Just bought a HOWA 1500 in 6mm Creed 24" HB barreled action from Brownell's. Hoping to make a light weight mountain rifle out of it. As the barrel is very heavy, I am wondering if it can be turned down and then fluted? if not, a custom barrel is needed.

I appreciate any insight / experience.

All the best.

You can do it, but its generally not recommended to recontour or flute factory barrels. You're at a higher risk of having accuracy issues after an aggressive process is performed on a button rifled or hammer forged factory barrel

You would be money ahead to rebarrel than recontour. Your accuracy potential won’t be nearly as iffy. I have a Winchester featherweight contour on a 6.5 creedmoor. It’s a hart barrel and it’s a laser. Buy a featherweight barrel. Not sure but you may be able to buy a pre fit even.

Thanks
I put a PacNor on my Howa mini in 6mm Grendel. A laser. But PacNor burnt down last week :-(. So now whose barrel do I get - in SS. I do not like Lilja and Krieger does not make a light SS barrel.

I do not see a Winchester featherweight profile on their website. Will you please guide me to where I can get that info?

Call them up. Nicest people to deal with. They will contour a barrel to your liking. They have the Winchester featherweight in their computers. BTW I love the contour. Made a 7 pound all in 6.5 creedmoor hunting rifle.

Well, I picked up the HOWA 1500 6mm Creed 24" HB Barreled Action Thu afternoon. Its action plus bolt are a lot heavier than I thought :-(

So, plan B. While at the local store / FFL Dealer, I ran into a brand new Kimber 84M Classic Select in 308 Win that he was try to get rid of for $699 - nope not a typo. I "had" to buy it even though I already have one of the first Kimber 84M Classics in 308 Win. One of them is going to become the donor action for the 6mm Creed build. I just have to find the right stock for it and then decide.

The HOWA you ask? Well a long range steel shooter eventually. It is still in the box.
