I have an8.5-25x50 vari x 3 lrt that I want to change to mil-dot reticle. I would like to make the scope as close to a tactical version as possible. I was saving for a mark 4 but ran across this new old stock at a great deal so... I am new to long range shooting, and need all the advice I can get. I have read that the turrets need to be changed as well as the reticle or the adjustments will not be correct. Please advise.

Re: Turret change on vari x 3

Welcome to the Hide.
First off what turrets do you have on it? Some VX III LRT's had target turrets with 1/4 MOA adjustments and tall caps that covered them. Some had M1 1/4" MOA adjustments (No caps).
Either one will be ready to shoot, ready to practice and perform well provided you do your part.
You don't have to have Mil-Dot retical unless you are actually going to actually use the Mil-Dot system to shoot.
A good range finder to check your distance is what I would recommend rather than trying to use the ranging reticle to figure distance.
Then practice, practice and practice.

I owned VXIII Leupolds for years. I finally took the plunge when I found a deal on a Mark4 16X. I now view my VX scopes as redheaded step children I don't take out in public very often. Another Mark4 purchase is planned as soon as I sell my motorcycle. VXIIIs are great hunting scopes but can't compare to a Mark4. You should have kept saving up for a Mark4. You can often get a great deal on one used in the classified section.

Take a look at the TMR reticle.

Leica makes a good one, I have the LRF 1200 and you can sometimes find them used for $400 (Sometimes less, sometimes more).
They now make one called the CRF and they might even make a newer one than that, I havnt checked lately to what they are offering now.
Swarovski has a nice range finder but they will be more expensive and they seem to fetch a healthy used price, but still very sweet.

As far as your scope is concerned, if it is a 30 mm tubed Luepold, has a black ring on the objective that is labeled Vari-X III T/LR then it is the same part number as a MARK 4 which came out a few years later (Some of the newer MARK 4's may be a different part number..Don't know) These are good scopes for the money and will perform quite nicely, in fact, I use them all the time and still have a few helping me hit what I aim at.
If its a 30 mm tube T/LR then quit thinking you will be better off with a Luepy Mark 4...you wont.
Just shoot, practice and get familiar with how your rifle shoots and what you can do with it.
If you don't handload, then gear up and start doing it if you can. One of the greatest things that helped me with my shooting was getting familar with handloading and then making loads that are tailored to my rifle and what Im shooting at I.E. targets, coyotes, deer, etc,etc... Plus its just plain fun.
There is alot to learn but if you apply yourself and do some research and practice, practice, practice....You will do well.
A person with a $500 used bolt action rifle that practices all the time and is extremely familiar with his rifle and his bullets and hitting targets at different ranges will most likely walk all over a guy that has a $2,000 rifle, hardly ever shoots & doesnt even know what bullets work well with his setup.
Have fun and get out and shoot.
