Re: TVP 500 yard and under COMPLETED!

My mount finally came today and it's beautiful. The workmanship is topnotch in making it fit my gun. Was hard to hit anything just looking over the barrel.

Lets see, I have two days to work up loads, mount and set tracking of scope, get sight settings for all the distances and get a feel for the gun. Just might make it, will at least give it a good try to get ready.

New barrel and caliber, new mount, new scope, new stock but then again, it's only 500 yards and such big targets. Should be able to guess on most of those. We are experts at MOHO (minute of holding off). Hope weather cooperates and rain holds off.

Sounds like the 500 and under will be fun but I bet it'll be full of unexpected challenges.

Re: TVP 500 yard and under COMPLETED!

Cool. It would be nice to know which course we're shooting Sunday ahead of time so we know which rifles to bring. Personally, I'd like to give the short course a try with the AR15.

Re: TVP 500 yard and under COMPLETED!

Tom, does the short course use 3 of the 4 intimidator positions or are they new locations?

What are the target sizes?

What are the distances?

What are the shooting positions? Prone, kneel, off a tree etc...

Re: TVP 500 yard and under COMPLETED!

Position one is to the upper right of the south end of the shooting building. Position two is position two of the Intimidator but different target locations. Position three is in my back yard..to the upper left of the north end of the shooting building. Target size is 12"x12". I dont know the exact distances as of yet. My range finder decided to not to come to work today, but they are from 175 yards to 500..plus a fuzz. Bring your range finders. I should have the distances Saturday. Shooting positions are prone for now. No logs etc. yet. I was lucky to get done what I got done under the circumstances but I'm sure everyone will like the course...considering Jim C. and I were grinning ear to ear all day while we were building it. A couple of surprise targets you will like..realistic so to speak.
So, with all that said and the response so far... looks like we are shooting the short course.

Re: TVP 500 yard and under COMPLETED!

AR-15's should do well. This is the idea..even a .204 with a good scope could work. Remember tho..just because it's 500 and under doesnt mean it's going to be a walk in the park. Lots of down hill shots and across valleys, even one tucked away in the woods like a bedded deer or woodchuck coming out of his den to see whats up. One target is behind rocks so if you fall short your in the rocks. I think you will enjoy it. We had fun building it, you'll have fun shooting it. This would be a great course for kids or newbe's or even the seasoned precision shooter wanting to score a perfect 120.

Re: TVP 500 yard and under COMPLETED!

Top,
You can use whatever shooting positon you choose. I thought I would let the shooters decide what they feel is best for each (position/target) and mold the match to our liking. I would like to see shooting sticks for a few shots. But for the first match or two I thought we would feel it out to see what evolves. So yes, bring sticks rear bags packs whatever you feel you need or what to learn shoot with. Oh, and shooting mats or something dry too lay on too. It may be wet in a couple spots.

Station 1
223
390
470

280

550

280
500
475

Re: TVP 500 yard and under COMPLETED!

The course was shot with 223, 223ai, 22-250, 6br & a 308. Any hunting/ground hog gun will work just fine. A Burris ballistic plex may be the ticket with a 223 as the reticle is supposed to be accurate to 500 holds.

I needed about 10 minutes elevation with my ai at the longest target so no fancy big scopes are required. I had a blast today and expected to see a lot more shooters. As the weather gets better so will its popularity.

Thanks for the pics wayde.

Re: TVP 500 yard and under COMPLETED!

Good job Wayde!
Wayde shot a 110 out of a possible 120 today on our short course wielding a .223 bolt gun. Alot of first shot hits today. Conditions were great.. not much wind till later in the day and it was a mystery how it was working.
This course can be shot with any AR15 or AR10 configuration.
This is a great first step for someone who has not shot long range before. I was impressed with the scores today everyone did very well. Thanks to everyone who showed up today ..and could someone please post Waydes picture..todays match winner photo?

I don't think anyone has come up with a good name yet.

How about "Beginners Luck"?

Today I did it!
Same as bows.
Head and practice.

Bro wants me to try the course with a varmit load, and different zero.

I think I shot a very respectable 85 with a plain hunting rifle on the short course.

Plan on shooting it next time with a varmit load, and different zero.

Can't wait!

I would really hate to make it an arms race. We can though. The hills will sound like the scene in the movie "Blazing Saddles" where the cowboys were sitting around the fire eating.

Re: TVP 500 yard and under COMPLETED!

John,
Cherry wheat is probably not in season.
Your choice.
Try to make it to the .308 shoot.

Guy's,
This is supposed to be fun.
Short course was concieved for hunting, and guy's just getting started.
Shoot what ya bring and have a chance.
Maybe ten point bonus for 3 min and under for hunting guns?

We had guy's spotting and helping on both sides of shooters.

This was not made to be a tacticle course, sorry to ramble.
