Re: Twist Rate
Savages are great shooters. Good choice.
I've always loved the flat shooting of the 22-250. In recent times find shoot a .308 or a .223 more often. A .223 is less expensive to shoot. A .223 will do nearly everything a 22-250 will, shells are half price if you check your local retailer, and your barrel will last tons longer. A .308 can shoot further than a 22-250 for about the same cost, and its heavier bullets work better if ever want to hunt game. If want to shoot say 400yd to 1000yd a .308 is hard to beat.
Savage .223s are a 1 in 7 or a 1 in 9 twist better for heavy bullets than the 1 in 12 Remington. Savage .308s are 1 in 10 better for heavy bullets than the 1 in 12 Remington. Remington is behind the times and Savage on barrel twist rates.
Looking at the Savage Model 12 VLP DBM, it is a great gun that will never outlive its usefulness. Awesome gift to yourself. Would get it in 300 WSM, .308, or .223 myself depending on planned use.
I am also curious, how do you intend to use the gun. As will help the people here give you further advice.
