I am looking at purchasing a Savage VLP DBM 22-250 as a graduation gift to myself. Now my question is, they come in two different twist rates 1-9 and 1-12 I know the 1-9 will shoot heavier grain bullets and not shoot light grain bullets very well. I'm not sure how the 1-12 handles the different grain bullets. I will be using the rifle for both target and varmint, If you where me what twist rate would you go with? All help is welcome! Thank you!

Re: Twist Rate

it depends on how far you want to shoot. if your farthest shoots will be around 300 yards the light 40 to 55gr bullets do great in a 1-12. if you plan on shooting farther get the 1-9.

Re: Twist Rate

You can still shoot the lighter bullets with the fast twist, you just have to slow them down a bit. The 55s out of a 12 twist are pretty accurate out to 500 or so (1 MOA) at 4600 ASL. If it is going to be used within 400 to 500 yards and for mainly prairie dogs I would just go with the 12 twist and run the 55 Vmax. If its mainly coyotes and targets then I would do the 9 twist and run the 75 Amax.

Re: Twist Rate

Savages are great shooters. Good choice.

I've always loved the flat shooting of the 22-250. In recent times find shoot a .308 or a .223 more often. A .223 is less expensive to shoot. A .223 will do nearly everything a 22-250 will, shells are half price if you check your local retailer, and your barrel will last tons longer. A .308 can shoot further than a 22-250 for about the same cost, and its heavier bullets work better if ever want to hunt game. If want to shoot say 400yd to 1000yd a .308 is hard to beat.

Savage .223s are a 1 in 7 or a 1 in 9 twist better for heavy bullets than the 1 in 12 Remington. Savage .308s are 1 in 10 better for heavy bullets than the 1 in 12 Remington. Remington is behind the times and Savage on barrel twist rates.

Looking at the Savage Model 12 VLP DBM, it is a great gun that will never outlive its usefulness. Awesome gift to yourself. Would get it in 300 WSM, .308, or .223 myself depending on planned use.

I am also curious, how do you intend to use the gun. As will help the people here give you further advice.
