i currently run a 1:8 twist in a 26 inch 6.5x47 Lapua barrel. Planning ahead for a new barrel as they seem to take a very long time to secure.

Wondering if there might be an accuracy advantage to different twist rates. The barrel companies offer 1:7.5, 1:8 and 1:8.5 options.

i understand that heavier/longer projectiles generally perform better / stabilize optimally with faster twist rate barrels....but as i do not hunt and will only shoot paper or steel to at most 1400 yards and generally at 100-500 yard ranges is there an optimal twist rate with regard to accuracy?

stello, i've not seen that twist noted on some of the barrel manufacturer sites....could you please tell me more about it. i would imagine that it's like a carcano rifle where the twist rate increases as you go from breach to muzzle.

are these increasing twist barrels well received and noted to improve accuracy. would love to learn more about it. thank you

They are exactly as you describe.

the sig ssg3000 uses an extension system not too dissimilar i guess to what one might find on an AR platform....the barrel screws into the barrel extension and then this composite then slides into the receiver and is captured by a series of through bolts which index the rifle barrel and apply pinch force to secure the barrel and extension into the receiver

...to date i have only purchased a Benchmark Barrel. It looks like a nice barrel, certainly very nice people to deal with.... but the barrel took a very long time to secure which they did tell me in advance....not complaining. While i like the barrel i guess i always wonder if another barrel might prove even better/more accurate? I seem to average .5 to .6 moa at 100 yards, every now and then a bit better or bit worse. it just doesn't compare to the one hole groups i so often observe on this forum.

i've been working diligently at improving my technique and form as well as my reloading efforts to optimize my results. i take great care of the rifle and have the trigger set nicely. i think the rifle platform is a good one. i do fairly well in pistol bullseye formats so my dissatisfaction with my rifle experience is disheartening. i've taken a couple of classes and read several books (looking forward to the new Mr. Galli book). i think my orientation to the rifle, set up, trigger control is satisfactory. i'm only shooting prone on a nice new stable and expensive bipod. my scope and mount are decent. Everything is torqued appropriately.

i'm certainly realistic..... perhaps i'm just not great at rifle but never the less i'm due for a barrel in a few months and so thought i'd research here the opinions of others more experienced that myself as to what might be best.

really appreciate the help and information

I went with a proof barrel from straight jacket armory prefit for my origin in 6.5x47 and it took 4 weeks. just during load development on a wild guess charge I produced a .466" group. 8T
