Ok i went to the range this weekend to zero my scope. only to find that my scope has moved. the screws were tightened but where its placed on my rifle makes it difficult to get a good grip with my current mounting equipment. i looked online and i found quick release scope mounts but im not looking for that exactly.

what im looking for is a scope mount system that is two parts, a base and an interlocking scope mount. Ideally the two pieces lock together with no room for movement. This would allow me to have multiple scopes zeroed and easily interchangeable.

Re: two part scope mounts for multiple optics

In general, swapping parts and quick change are the enemies of precision.

If I wanted to quick change optics, I would buy an ADM or Larue mount for each optic. Zero each for the rifle, then map out the shifts that occur when remounting each optic. Chances are they will be fairly consistent, BUT I would still bet you will have to tweak the zero a little bit each time.

I have not seen a setup really like you are describing.

You mention mounting issues/difficulties. Details and or a photo may help get some better responses.

Scope has moved, or your zero/poi has changed?

Re: two part scope mounts for multiple optics

it moved a good three inches forward.

here is my scope and the case that its in. Where the scope should be. I dont understand how it moved it made sure it was tight before i took it out of the case to zero it.

Re: two part scope mounts for multiple optics

Ill try not to sound too negative, but that whole setup looks a bit ah. . . . . Inadequit. It looks as thos the mount is part of the optic??? If so I think an upgrade in optic and mount are in order. Lots of good options out there at different price points

Re: two part scope mounts for multiple optics

I do realize they are inadequate and i really do appreciated the tact used lol. I'm not really looking to fix the issue with the current optic setup. The optics used i feel are adequate for about only 125m i just posted the pictures as a reference to what happened. And after spending a good 3 hours at the range Sunday im done with it. I already told the wife lol.

I am however, doing research into optic mounts. I would like the ability to have easily interchangeable scopes that are still zeroed, but i think what I'm looking for is movie fantasy/fiction. I could have multiple upper receivers but that is not really what im looking for.

As far as optics go. I was looking around yesterday and i found this http://www.opticsplanet.com/yukon-sightmark-8-5-25x50-tactical-riflescope.html it fits my budget well enough and its about 3X more powerful

i think that this is a decent upgrade for my current setup. I'm still trying to feel out my rifle as well. its not .223/5.56 its a true .308 and its different than what im used to which is .223 but i am pleased with the performance so far.

Re: two part scope mounts for multiple optics

Sgtwtf, you get what you pay for, if you cant afford it, don't look for a bunch of options like lots of magnification and illumination, go for sturdy reliable basics. Look for something along the lines of a quality fixed power, Bushnell 10x, SWFA 10x, or perhaps a variable like the Weaver Grand Slam tactical 3-9 which are on sale at Midway, I believe Lowlight did a review of this scope. Use the search feature, lots of great info on the HIde on just about everything. And with regards to your question I have two AR uppers, a 16 inch 223 and an 18 inch 264LBC, I have a 2.5-10x24 NXS in a Larue SPR 1.5 mount, I can easily interchange the scope between the two uppers, adjust the scope settings and within a few shots I can be zeroed, does it work yes, but I figure I will get a decent red dot for the 223 some day.

Re: two part scope mounts for multiple optics

I use Aadland 3 lug rings and thus far they return to zero flawlessly. If you used these you would have no problema. However as stated above look at a more reliable scope. Bells and whistles and cheap price tag. . . . Just frustration waiting to happen. I have one of the swfa 10x scopes. Its great for what it is. Its nothing fancy and ive gotten lost in rev counts numerous times lol but it returns, to zero clicks are true, and glass is plenty clear.

Re: two part scope mounts for multiple optics

ok pure noob response here so be prepared if i sound less that bright. Bells and whistles aside if you have some optics that are powerful enough and have adjustments to get it zeroed. isn't every scope the same? im being very general in this statement but what makes a scope "quality" or a sign or symptom of a inferior product?

Re: two part scope mounts for multiple optics

Short answer. Not at all.

So a scopes adjustment equates an angle, and only a tiny fraction of an angle at that. So every time you turn an elevation or windage turret you are moving the reticle glass inside the scope just fractions of an inch. Since these movements are so fine we have many many examples of scopes that just dont hold any level of accuracy. Such as you dial a scope 1.75 moa you actually get 1.6, and the problem compounds the more you add. Plus take into acccount the adjustment threads could be sloppy. Then your reticle might shift around a bit, changing your point of impact.

This is just one of the many many factors of quality in the extremly complicated device we call a rifle scope. I recommend you search the site and read through our wealth of knowledge here. You can learn alot.

(edit) need to spell check more when I post from my phone :p

Re: two part scope mounts for multiple optics

Take a look at leupold's mark 4 ims. You purchase a base that can remain stationary or slide and their are various inserts such as integral ring sets or risers that are made for it. Remember though, swapping different optics may change your needs for where your mount is positioned (distance on rail and in height) to compensate for changes in eye relief, size of objective etc...

If your not completely sold on this idea, you may want to consider a dedicated mount for each, less headache... This way you can measure and have each one exactly the way you want opposed to forcing them to fit/work.

What is in that mount now? Couldn't tell from your picture but looks a little... sitting in front of the PRS stock.

Good luck
