Let us rejoice and celebrate all that is KUKRI.
laugh.gif

A little context: I fell in love with the Kukri design last year when I decided on a custom build. So, I contacted Mike and put in an order for one in .308. At the time, I tried to convince my dad to get one as well...but to try something in .260 or similar so that the recoil wouldn't be as bad on his repaired shoulder. To no avail, he just couldn't make up his mind...or so I thought.

Well...Mike delivered my Kukri last week, much to my excitement. I believe the words from my FFL when he opened the box was something on the order of "well you son of a b&#$!, that's beautiful". It was everything I had expected, and wanted. I had to scurry home and get my little scope mounted in preparation for some range time.

My father had been planning to come into town and celebrate his 65th birthday with us...so I had decided not to tell him I finally had my grubby hands on the Kukri. I wanted to surprise him at the range. Well folks, the joke was on ME!!! Apparently, Mike and my father had been conspiring against me this entire time....and my father had ordered an identical twin (in .260 Rem) to my Kukri when I had placed my order!!! Mike and my family kept it a complete surprise...I couldn't believe it!!

We decided to go sight them in at the Best of the West on Friday. Took our time and got our zero stops set, and zero'd in at 100. After a short break we each shot two 5-round strings. No pics, but they were around 3/4" (ctc, give or take)...which we felt was pretty good considering the circumstances. Winds were sustaining 25 and gusting to 40mph...it was challenge enough to keep the crosshairs steady (wind was blowing our bodies around pretty good). I will be certain to post a more appropriate range report when we get back out and shoot more comfortably. The guns felt great...very excited to see what they'll do when we get more time to stretch their legs!!

Re: UGSW...full of surprises

Mike is sneaky like that. When I had mine built I came up with the list of components for the build. Well I was deployed at the time so my wife did most of the planning and build with Mike via phone and email. Any suggestion or question I would email Mike would usually be answered by me and your wife got this and we have surprises for you. It was kinda frustrating at the time but in the end I really appreciated all her and Mike did with the build. It turned out amazing and better than I could have dreamt up. Mike is outstanding to deal and is an amazing person.

Those rifles are absolutely amazing and that is great shooting in those conditions.

Re: UGSW...full of surprises

GOTCHA! From the dad. Now he'll never trust me. This thing went off just as planned. Thanks to my family & Mike.

Mike went along with me when I asked him to keep mine a secret and was very helpful to a newbie. These KUKRI's are awesome! The .260 is so smooth. We love'em.

I also would like to thank Hide members for all that I have learned while lurking. It was frustrating at times being unable to post questions in fear of giving away the "secret".

As far as Best of the West, we were very impressed. Very professional and 1st class. We dialed in at 100 and left it there because of the wind.

Dan,
These guys are using the Surgeon DBM. I'm also shipping with the M5. I'm still working out a few things on the UGSW DBM. The machining is a bit more complex due to the added features and although we've been able to incorporate these features manually and by hand, the CNC isn't wanting to cooperate.

Max/Mr. Gary,
This was one of the most fun projects I've done. The project that runs parallel to this one is the one for rdgshooter.

I'm really pleased with how the rifles turned out. The KUKRI in the MCS-T is extremely handy. Thanks Guys and it was great working with you both.

It's the KUKRI Contour that Bartlein does for me. Essentially, it's a re-dimensioned Varmint. The breech diameter and length are custom as is the taper.

Best of the West was great. I'm looking forward to going back...leaps and bounds better than anything I've experienced in the Austin area.

Re: UGSW...full of surprises

Well...my dad (Samurai) just sent me these pics. Can't believe he's already spilt blood!!! Lucky man...living the life!!

These rifles shoot like a dream. This is his .260, testing out the 139 Scenars on a little swine.

Re: UGSW...full of surprises

I have to echo everything that is being said about UGSW. Mike Bush goes out of his way to ensure that you are kept up on your build. I have a lefty Perseus almost done and I and getting really excited about it. I wish I could get a picture of my FFL's face when he gets it in; he is going to be really jealous I am sure. I have had many rifles come in and out of this FFL's shop and sometimes he is yea, it is ok but I think this one will blow him away.

Re: UGSW...full of surprises

Got to the range yesterday with the KUKRI 260 and not so windy conditions as our first shoot. I warmed up at 100 with 5 shots that measured .750 C to C. Without the lone pull to the right, it was .350.

Then I moved to 200 and the 5 measured 1.63. The last 5 shots at 100 were .529. I know I shot 5 even though there is only 4 showing. It is possible my 65 yr. old brain only loaded 4 into the mag but my wife confirmed it was 5. Dunno.

Shots were from bench using bipod and rear bag.

I am not an accomplished shooter (yet) but a long time hunter. I would like to thank my son (Ishikawa) for steering me in the precision rifle direction. I see a future ahead with lots of good times together.

I will do my best to post a pic of the last group.

Re: UGSW...full of surprises

Lookin good! Not bad for a second time out....not bad at all. Looks like you're already settling into that rifle very well.

How's that .260 feel on your shoulder after 20 rounds?

Now...go kill some more piglets.

You know how to post pics now so there's no excuses

Re: UGSW...full of surprises

For a surgically repaired shoulder the 260 is the way to go. Mild recoil. Initially I wanted Mike to install a brake but he suggested that I wait and test the recoil.

I'm glad he did. The pigs they no likey.

Re: UGSW...full of surprises

I gotta say not only do I see some awesome rifles, but father and son posting about twin rifles is just as awesome.

...and we're still waiting on pictures of more dead piggy's.

p.s. I've had surgery on my right shoulder as well. Fortunately I'm not where I have to downgrade to a .260 yet. However, I do enjoy the lack of recoil with my 6.5 Grendel.

Re: UGSW...full of surprises

Thank you sandwarrior. This kinda thing makes me proud.

As far a more dead piggies, Deb (wife) put this dry mama to sleep Sunday pm with her 243 model 7. Estimated 160# according to TexasBoars.com formula.

What's the weight on that thing? Looks like the perfect rig for hunting, both two legged and four

I agree those rifles look excellent I really want something like that.

Re: UGSW...full of surprises

those rifles are beautiful. The best part of that whole story is the shooting memories you'll get with your Pop and two really sweet ass guns! Enjoy em' to the hilt, good sir.

Ya gotta like that. I'll try and talk my wife into coming down with her .243. I remember when I got it, I worked up a load that shot about .75 MOA. I 'declared' it to be a good load. Wife goes and promptly shoots a reduced clover leaf...just to show me how good it really was.

So, I've got to ask. I haven't seen wild pigs around since I was in Georgia back in the early 80's. But, from what I understand of it these things are just running rampant all over farm ground down there in TX.

Re: UGSW...full of surprises

What drew you to the x24 over the x32 NXS?
I'm curious because I went with the x32 on my 20" as a compromise between weight and evening light functionality.

Re: UGSW...full of surprises

MLC, the 24's were originally purchased for use on AR's but just didn't suit our purposes. We were walking a lot and needed faster & closer target acquisition (on hogs) We ended up with aimpoints & are happy.

So we had the 24's and they were a good fit & also had good evening light fuctionality. I'm sure the 32 would be as good if not better.
