UH-1 News

After reading the article. I would say that their mission is likely what keeps them FMC and meeting metrics. Once you start adding in combat missions and the abuse that comes with it, numbers drop. Couple that with the fact that they have what I would guess to be an extensive collection of parts at AMARC to pull from, and this allows them capabilities that newer aircraft don't have the luxury of.

LOL.....cause flying old gray haired 4-stars around for golf your aircraft better be up, ready to go.
The Air Force ones are primarily used in the missle fields to move security forces and silo crews around. There was a crew out of Spokane that used them for search and rescue. No general is going to fly around in a Huey. They'll be on their C-21 flying to Florida for a "conference".

From the above link:
In the Washington, D.C., area, the aircraft’s primary mission is ferrying VIPs between the city and Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. It is also tasked with whisking government officials to Andrews in the case of a nuclear attack.

Well I thought it was cool. I understand FMC. I procure new turbine engines for the Army.
It is pretty cool to see them still have a mission and that they fly so well. It is a very tried and true proven platform. It would be interesting to compare what their break rate was back in Vietnam versus what it is against current aircraft. My Dad was a UH-1 radio guy in the 70's, but I haven't really picked his brain on how they flew or what they fixed. There was talk about the Air Force replacing theirs with Blackhawks, but I haven't seen any news on that in a while.

Makes you believe the Generals will be saying: "You can take my UH-1 from me when you pry it from my cold dead hands!!"
LMAO

Don't get me wrong. I get this aircraft runs much less sophisticated equipment and "easier" to maintain. In the end that limits what your mission will be these days. I still look up when I hear a helo coming thru.

I still look up when I hear anything sky travel related. It still brings me joy when I see F-15 AB's cutting through the night sky, especially when downrange. A B-1 in full burner at night is a sight to see as well. Aircraft MX has been my job for almost 18 years now. Never got over to the rotor side, all my time is fixed wing between fighters and a stint on tankers.

years ago, i was up for re-enlistment and i was offered a crew chief slot on the only squadron of uh-1’s that the army had left. on my way to sign the papers, a p.o.s. NCO came around the corner and laid into me for something i had absolutely nothing to do with. it pissed me off so bad, i did an about-face and went back to my barracks room and locked the door until 17:05 hours.....5 minutes after my re-enlistment window closed.

that is in my top 5 biggest mistakes that i have made in life

I learned long ago that I have more ass than they have teeth, so they can chew all day long. 🤣

And most of them are like chihuahuas. A bunch of fucking yapping and no bite.

@AFGWS are you a spark chaser?
Fuel Cell guy here.
Spent 3 yrs on HH-53/HC-130 (P/N).
17 yrs with B-1B (EAFB and MHAFB)
Throw in KC-EC-135 and F-15 C,D,E & F-16 C/D, and I had enough.
I miss the nighttime launches with the Bone.

The best was back before the wall came down. We were tasked with launching everything on base. 28 KC/EC 135 and 35 B-1B in under 4hrs. What a sight to see!!

I am exactly that. I started out at Grand Forks on the 135, then to MH as a Boar working the light gray tails, then to Osan for 16's and A-10's and then back to MH where I now reside working dark grays with the Tigers

Over 1200 hours as UH-1 pilot and 987 of those hours in VN. She is a very forgiving rotorcraft. I’ve chopped up branches and small trees plus bamboo with the rotor blades (semi-monocoque construction). Even had an unexploded anti-aircraft round take out the center of one of my blades while in flight. Flew the aircraft for 20 more minutes, landed and the blade flexed to the ground. Do not believe the new composite blades can take that kind of abuse. Additionally, the environment, not the mission has the most effect on helicopters. UH-1s were also immune to high power radio transmissions/waves - no fly-by-wire.

Who knew?
I did. That was the first helo I ever flew. Super simple and reliable, maintenance was a breeze (for rotary wing), they just worked. Chapters 5 and 9 (Limitations and Emergency Procedures) in the -10 could be condensed into a single sheet of paper for reference.

You want something that works? Make it simple. You want a multimillion dollar piece of shit missile magnet? Build an Apache.

500 hours in an AH-1G. Underpowered just like the UH-1, but what a weapons system. SCAS could give you fits but solvable.
