I have my parts gathered up for my M40A1 build, all but the optics. The Unertl scope is still needed. I am wondering when I do purchase the scope, 1. Who would preform repair work on unit if needed?
2. I am 65 years old, still going strong, but like my rifle scopes to preform with good vision and zero focus issues. My eyes are not what they use to be and I have not looked thru these scopes.
I plan on shooting this rifle , it will not be a safe queen...
Thanks, Charlie112

As to repairs I think there is a company working on them - Iron sight comes to mind but Im not 100 percent on that.

If you are looking to buy one the CMP prices seem to be moderating

Regards its utility.....remember its 1977 technology.

Setting the ocular will require a little more attention than a modern scope, think old school lock rings where lash in the threads cant be accounted for until you tighten it all up and in doing so you see you lost some clarity. Parallax is set at one distance, setting parallax is a bit of a process with the same issues as the ocular - looks good tighten it down - damn lost my focus. The adjustments are with one particular round travelling at a set velocity in mind, the adjustments are quirky.

If your goal is to own a 1977 rifle you have to expect 1977 technology.

I love shooting my A1 with the USO MST100 but it is not a modern rifle.

Its awesome what it was designed for. It can shoot great groups. You just have to expect that you have to live with something that was replaced with new technology for good reason.

Ironsite in Tulsa, Ok did the repair work on mine here recently. No complaints
Thanks for the replies, I see that the CMP prices have changed some here lately, I check the web site often. I realize the technology has changed for the better over the years, but, I still have to see good enough to hit what I am aiming at, that is my main concern, can I get there with the UNERTL scope, I am new to this type of scope....

It is plenty clear assuming its not a really beat up.

If CMP says its serviceable it will be fine.

Just keep in mind - sure it will shoot tight groups - but that is not what its design intentions were.

Its made to be a fast, no thinking, instrument to put M118 on targets - humans.

The drop tables are neat because you may be adding elevation with one control while subtracting with another in order to get your POA to = POI.

Took mine to a class and when the instructor did an excercise calling out MOA adjustments it was kind of a pain in the ass trying to figure out what I was doing.

Learn it like the back of your hand and you wont have my problems.

Why I have some of your attention, a quick question, Was the Weaver T-10 used on a M40A1???/

Yes.

second Recon Bn, early on, had a few rifles with the T-10.

The T-10 is a fantastic "range" scope.

I have one of those also.

Except for the unmarked stadia reticle, adjustments and glass I could call comparable with any other scope I have.

There is a route to get a mil dot style reticle in a T-10 I just havent done it.

Redfield 3-9X scopes even made their way on to some early A1s.

But classic is the Unertl MST

One thing to remember is the mil dots were painted on so if you are going to use it to mil a target figure out what the mil's actually are. They are not all 3.6moa that is for sure. Also if it has the original reticle be careful with heat. If you live in AZ and leave it in the trunk you have a good chance of having the mil dots melt inside the scope.
