New IMI match brass. Necks are pretty out of round and dinged so a mandrel will be required. The double box had a rough life in shipping too. Arrived as a cardboard and tape bag.
This is for a gas gun. JP 18” 308 barrel. I only plan half of its shooting to be “precision” as in DMR type roles and some steel fun. The rest of its life will be spent with a 1-6 power scope and ball powders. I decided it best to just buy new brass for it and….. man…SORTING SUCKS. I hope none of you guys actually enjoy this stuff.
Anyway, here are the weights I got. I weighed out the first 100, then decided on “too low”, low
178.6-179.6, high
179.7-180.4, and “too high” based on the first 100 sample. I ended up throwing the 180.5’s in the “high batch” later on since I ended up with a bunch of them. If I had it to do over I would let the lower batch catch the 178.5’s and put the 179.6’s in the higher batch. I play to use the “too high” and “too low” for blasting ammo at matches where I likely will not get to pick up my brass.
177.X several
178.4 and below x about 70 (too low batch)
178.5 about 30 (too low batch)
178.6 – 179.6 x 450 (low batch)
179.7 – 180.5 x 400 (high batch
180.6 and up x about 40 (too high batch)
181.X several
QUESTION. Is the 1.1gr spread of
178.6-179.6 considered “wide” or about right? I would love to throw the 178.5’s in with this batch for quantity, but then the spread would be 1.2gr.
I tried to uniform the primer pockets on 4 cases. 3 were so tight (diameter) I could barely get the K&M tool to turn or go in. All were shallow. Ended up removing 2 or 3 tenths of a grain from one before it quit cutting. I will be waiting till these are fired before I uniform the primer pockets. I will probably deburr the flash holes as I get to them for loading.
