The M14 DMR mostly used the GG&G mount, out of production for over a decade and are rare as hen's teeth. The updated version of the DMR, the M39 EMR, uses a Smith Enterprises #2006 mount, available from Brownells for $300. http://www.brownells.com/optics-mou...s/m14-m1a-tactical-scope-mount-prod12779.aspx

In the absence of being able to source the GG&G for a DMR version, I don't think anyone would think bad if you ran the Smith mount, the GG&G had issues anyhow and was replaced for a reason.

They probably did run the Smiths on them in the later years anyhow, that was after my time though so take that for what it's worth. I haven't touched a DMR since early '02, but if I was doing one I would 100% run the Smith myself. Sounds like an awesome build though, even with as much present day firearms and gear I have, I'm a sucker for the classics.

The smith was used afaik in addition to the ggng. SEI made a ton of guns for in theatre work all on their parts and m14 returned actions.

the sadlak parts are also highly regarded and hard to tell at distance.

So, pardon my ignorance, but what's the difference between a "USMC DMR" and an M1A with an upgraded stock and a scope? Is it mostly just trying to stay as close to a particular style that was issued at a certain point in time, or are there weight and performance requirements?

No ignorance. The DMR is a highly accurized version ( glass bedded, unitized gas system) of the M 14 created by the precision weapon shop in Quantico. if I get lucky I'll have one built in similar fashion buy some similar people. Also as a former Marine and former sniper I have an affinity for Marine Corps precision weapons. I also have a M 40a1 and an M40A3 return stock which are built into full rifles
