USMC M 40 A1 W/ Unertl 10x scope. Opinions

Re: USMC M 40 A1 W/ Unertl 10x scope. Opinions

Hi Gunnerside: Well, the sling is backward in the photo. (The metal hooks should not face the rifle stock, rips the hell out of your hands and clothing as pictured.)

Seriously, The M40-A1 “clones or spec builds” are terrific recreations of USMC history. Having the return stock & bottom metal adds to this. “They’ve Been There”.

That being said, how close to “Spec Build” this rifle was made is open for discussion. I suggest you read the thread about M40A1 builds and compare it to the comments listed.

If your expecting that this is a wise investment, well who knows. Their not original USMC issued Sniper Rifles, just great copies. My son just got one for me off the Hide (It’s fantastic!). Their fun to bring to the range talk about & shoot and that’s that. But No USMC M40 anything’s are in private hands, from what I’ve learned here. The marines don’t throw away things like they did before (Ie., Surplus Weapons).

If you’re really looking for a rifle to shoot, there are many modern versions based upon the Rem 700 that are available at lower costs.

Well, the sling is backward in the photo

No it is different.
See Jim Owens book on sling
Many HP shooters use sling like that

The sling is not backwards, just attached incorrectly, the single tail end is the back, it is just connected to the front instead of on itself.

Most get this rifle for a collectors item and not so much to shoot.

There is a list, far and wide of better suited modern tactical rifle available. That design, including the scope is over 30 years old and way past its prime. there is a reason its been replaced, twice now. For a collector, willing to spent close to $10k, a well built spec rifle is a fine addition, providing it sits on a shelf. For a shooter, I would look else where, as many companies make modern day clones for much less money with much better scopes.

Welcome to 2009, soon to be 2010, this isn't 1978 anymore.

The scope mount pictured is incorrect also for a spec build, needs to be a 1 piece Unertl with or without the clip slot. I can only assume that they went with the Redfield or Leupld mount and rings cause it is not clip slotted, it does not appear to be?

Barrel 1 in 11 is not correct for the build. Should be 1 in 12. Don't know what you are looking for, but if you have the cash, buy it, just don't think it is a spec build.

+1 to what these other guys said. I don't see clip slotting and not the correct mount. If you want an M40A1, this is not it. You got alot to learn about an A1 if that's what you want

If I was gonna drop the cheese for a spec build, I'd personally hold out for one that's more correct than that one.

Like LL said, it's a collector buy, not a shooter, so I'd want it to be right as rain... Unless you can get in it priced good enough to finish it out right.
