USMC trade in stocks

Re: USMC trade in stocks

As far as I know they've always been short action.. Not an expert on them but do plan on getting one someday. All the ones I've ever seen with certificate are short action.

Close, but not exactly right. The idea of the Long Action in preparation for the 300WM refit is a common misconception. The M24 was actually designed for the 30-06, but it was realized after design started that there was not enough match 30-06 to complete testing the platform. It was then switched to 7.62 NATO. Thus, the Long Action with a 308 BF. At the time of the inception of the M24, 300WM was not even a type classified munition with the Army.

Here is more information regarding the topic:
M24

And yes, as stated above, all M40s were Short Actions. So if it is indeed a return stock, it would be a short action.

Not all. I have one that doesn't. Doesn't really matter because I will never part with mine.

Re: USMC trade in stocks

"One mans trash is another mans treasure" If owning a piece of history isn't enough for you I don't know why you would choose a used htg stock over a new one for half the price.

That's all there is.

There is no logical reason to have a "Return" Stock instead of a new HTG.

In fact the HTG is far from the perfect design for a scoped bolt gun. It is what it is.

If I didn't carry an M40A1, I wouldn't care about reproducing one.

Re: USMC trade in stocks

How does the process work for the USMC to "return" a stock? Do they sell them back to McM and McM turn around and sell them to the public or how does that work? Also I know there was a limited return with A4's which made me ask, why? Was there something wrong with them?

Since the Marines went back to McMillan for new stocks (the McMillan A4) when they upgraded to the M40A3, they returned most of the M40A1 htg stocks back in for better pricing on the new ones. McMillan in turn offered them up to the public, although they didn't anticipate how popular they would be and their sold price was a lot less than what they're going for nowadays.

Anyway, the 11(?) or so McMillan A4's from the M40A3's were returned due to some issue or another (mostly because of a stripped flush cup or something, if I remember correctly). GAP got them all and offered them up as part of a full build only.

So I wouldn't expect to see any sizable quantities of "return" M40A3 stocks anytime soon. Unless the Corps goes ahead with the scuttlebutt I've been hearing about another upgrade to a longer range caliber (most likely .338 lapua?). Then who knows what will happen to the A3 rifles and their parts.

Re: USMC trade in stocks

As far as I know kft101 is 100% correct in his response. I am lucky enough to be the proud owner of both a M40A1 return stock and a M40A3 return stock as well. Both built by GAP. The main reason I desired to own them was knowing they are a piece of history, and a Marine carried them serving our country. I would not sell either of mine. I imagine this is the same for any other owners as well.

To also answer your question about the stocks having a certificate my A1 did and the A4 did not. JAA

The price sure beat a new one. I'm a tightwad, so a $150 stock was perfect.
