Hello fellow Hide enablers, looking for advice on what to do with a USMC Unertl scope. Always liked the look of the target scopes but never thought I’d get my hands on one.

I have a 15x on a USMC Remington 40x that was scratching the itch… but now?

I kind of like the idea of putting it on a Pre-64 M70 for an early Vietnam clone or do I look for a 1903 to make a WWII clone? What would be your thoughts?

This is a 1945 M70 that’s local. I think it’s an aftermarket barrel…

What is it and is it a good candidate for a USMC early Vietnam clone? I know the barrel is wrong and it’s a bit late, but I think I could upgrade to a Lilia or Bartlein down the road if it’s not too much of a crime to purists.

@Jeremy69

Buy this rifle:

Have it rebarreled according to the specs below.

If you haven’t already, go check it out.

You’d end up with a nice USMC early Vietnam M70 sniper rifle clone. It looks to be within the SN range.

my $.02,

I don't run it. It's actually a guy name Tim Plowman who does. He just has a lot of my pictures and research posted on there.

As far as my vote Jeremy, I would have both. :)

The rifle I posted has a Bartlein 20 inch barrel, but it started life as a 1962 model 70 featherweight in 243. Now it is a 308

If the gun has already been changed or is not super collectible then it’s fair game in my opinion

Thanks guys. The M70 I posted was sold while I was in indecision but learning more every hour with all the help here and resources pointed to. Still really on the fence if this is headed for a 1903 or an M70. Probably a slight preference to the M70 for a shooter or the 1903 for a collector…

The only thing I would say if I was trying to decide between the two, what is your budget? I think it would be a lot more money to build a M70 than a M1903. But it depends on how correct you want to go as well.

If you wanted to approach it from a history aspect, the M70 was likely only used in 1965/66. As soon as the M40 hit Vietnam in 1967, you don't ever see the M70 mentioned again.

The M1903 Unert was used from early 1943 to 1953. It saw used in WWII and Korea.
