I bought a USO scope that I am happy with but had a problem/question. between 3.2 and 8 power there is a little mark in the upper right hand corner of the retical. When you zoom in any further than 8 the mark slides out of the sight picture. Not sure what it is. The lens are clean.

Will this affect anything as far as performance??? Here are some pics. The scope is a T-Pal 3.2-17X44. 34mm tube. I have not dealt with the USO warranty department so I dont know what they will say. I would assume they will help with any problems I may have. Thanks for the advice guys.

Re: USO question/problem. Not sure what this is. PICS!

floaters.... dust or particulate matter inside on a lens gets magnified.... beat the scope as hard as you can against a phone book or something. Usually works for me, but you have to hit it hard.

Re: USO question/problem. Not sure what this is. PICS!

just let it be, it's on the inside of the scope. shooting will usually knock it loose. you'll see stuff like this every now and then in every scope that sees use.

Re: USO question/problem. Not sure what this is. PICS!

Beat that bitch against a phone book like it owes you money...

I've never had that in any of my scopes, but that's the suggested remedy, and you ain't hurting that scope...

The bodies of our scopes are machined with light break ups and then coated with Type III hard anodizing to reduce the unwanted stray light. Sometimes a small particle become loose and is attracted to the static properties of the glass reticle in the front focal plane. Since the reticle is under extreme magnification the dust particle appear to be very large. Most cases the particle will fall off of the reticle and stick to the grease that is on the inside of the tube. Sometimes it is necessary to help the duct along a bit. This can be done by shooting the rifle, taking a drive down a dirt road with the rifle, tapping the scope with a rubber mallet or anything that will give it a jar.

Ain't it scary when you are about to take a 2g scope and hit it on a phone book or bang stock on table?
Yup, hit it.
Solid scope, it can take it.

OT, sorry,
You guys remember the old USO thread where they were throwing it across the lot with a clay pigeon launcher?

Re: USO question/problem. Not sure what this is. PICS!

Yeah that's a goner, so I'll help by offering you $1000 just to take it off your hands......PM me with your address so I can send the payment (please hurry...:)

If you are reluctant to follow the others advice, send it to USO and they will "clean" it.

But all it may need is some use.

Re: USO question/problem. Not sure what this is. PICS!

I must report you to the proper authorities for phone book abuse! Ha!

I know what you are going through I had a fleck of something in my "new to me" 3.2-17 USO as well. I beat the hell out of it and its still there, but it moved a little more out of the way now its only visible to me on the lowest power setting. I can live with it, it doesnt affect the function of the scope. When I get around to sending my stock off for repair, I will try to beat another phone book into submission.

There is always the option of sending it back to USO for cleaning if it really bothers you.

That must be why you were progressively hitting it harder and harder huh?

Re: USO question/problem. Not sure what this is. PICS!

Try getting a pimp to help. You won't find a person that knows more about how to properly slap the !&@$ out of something that ain't acting right.

I think you need to do the... Off the shooting platform into the bush trick, like the other USO video.

Re: USO question/problem. Not sure what this is. PICS!

I use an old phonograph (yes, I'm OLD) anti static device first on the lenses and then give it a whack. depending on where the floater is located, it may come off a lot easier. These gadgets were like small pistols with a piezoelectric crystal inside which generated negative ions. You aimed a puff (yes, they blew a slight amount of air) at the record which counteracted the charge and released the dust more easily. Same idea with lenses. Another possibility, though not quite as effective is an anti-static brush, made of carbon fiber which drains some of the charge. The whole idea is to make the floater less sticky so you don't have to beat the scope so much.

Re: USO question/problem. Not sure what this is. PICS!

The first time I had a problem with a piece of dust on the lens was with a Schmidt & Bender. They told me to put a phone book down and hit the scope on the phone book. It cleared up the problem. I had a similiar problem with a USO, the same procedure took care of it. I actually think they are small pieces from the anodizing process used on the scope and sometimes small pieces come off during the assembly. One time I did have a piece of dust on the lense and I did the old hit it on the phone book and the piece of dust split into many pieces of dust and I had to send the scope in for the lens to be removed and cleaned.

You should have seen what Doc was doing to them when we were in Virginia Beach last year. $15,000.oo worth of scopes flying around TGI Friday's faster than the alcohol...
Ah the memories. Well, um, as fuzzy as they were anyway

Re: USO question/problem. Not sure what this is. PICS!

I don't know about all of this.
If I paid 2500 bucks for a scope, it better be flawless.

USO will make it right, it might take a while, but damnit, that does not belong in there.

If that had been a 1500 dollar Loopy, all the replies would have been to the effect of "That's what crappy QC will get you, you should never have bought one in the first place"

What is good for the goose is good for the gander.
That scope should never have left the factory with foreign matter in the tube.

Re: USO question/problem. Not sure what this is. PICS!

Send it in to USO they will get it out for you and service the scope to make sure it is assembled and running at 100%. I have had to send a couple in to be cleaned out as the "phone book method" did no good on them. I did however have one of their scopes with a spec of dust in it. Smacked it on a phone book and it fell off, haven't had an issue since.

that is an awesome answer
