Ok so I'm looking at getting a spotter with a reticle. My requirements are that I have to have a Mil reticle with a max power over 25X and I prefer relatively clear glass. I only need a spotting scope for longer range as my primary rifle has a max power of 25X as it stands (and S&B glass).

So anyway with that said the two scopes I'm considering are:
The Leupold 65145 (http://www.opticsplanet.net/leupold-mark-4-12-40x60mm-tactical-p4-spotting-scope-65145.html)
and the USO Spotter with the MPR (http://www.usoptics.com/product.php?partnumber=SPO-100)

If anyone has experience looking through the glass on both of these units I'd be greatly appreciative to hear your opinion. I've done a bit of searching and have been able to find a lot of opinions on each of these scopes but have not seen a lot of direct comparison.

If anyone has something else that I should be considering I'm all ears.

Re: USO Spotter vs Leupold Spotter

Yea I used to like Leupold... But ok I'm off to take a look at USO.

Whats the difference between "spotter" and "field glass" portability? At the moment most of what I do the portability won't be as much of an issue... Unfortunately I end up doing most of my shooting on my own... But its nice when I get someone else to go with me to be able to explain how to read the mil scale.

Re: USO Spotter vs Leupold Spotter

Appreciate the forward to the thread... Looks like a great deal for the money! Wonder how long it is till I can find one.... I see them online but none of them explicitly say they have the reticle.

Curious of this myself...

Re: USO Spotter vs Leupold Spotter

It was just introduced at the last shot show, so to new for alot of distributors just yet.
One of the differences between a field scope and spotter ,I would imagine would be field of view ?
I've been holding out for one since first reading shot show intel.
Pretty soon though.
It made it to Bushy's website recentlly, but still no price.

Re: USO Spotter vs Leupold Spotter

I've got the USO with pcmoa reticle, and one of my shooting buds has the Luppy HD, ED, whatever without the reticle. Before I got the USO I borrowed his scope a couple times to spot at 1000 yd. F-class match's.

OK, this is just my experience and perception. To me the Leupold was more clear, crisp, with better color rendition. You could spot trace for your shooter and the two on either side. Could have been the day but it was pretty amazing.

The USO has good glass but it doesn't compare to the glass in the scope my friend has. The USO does a good job at 25X and lower, when you get much higher power than that it gets hard to adjust for a clear view. When spotting for trace lower power is better anyway. The reticle is dead on, you can call wind and come ups quick and easy. Very tough scope, not afraid to take it out in the field and use it. For its intended use it is hard to beat, you can even bird with it if you want. I don't regret the purchase at all, and use it every week.

Re: USO Spotter vs Leupold Spotter

Greatly appreciate this point of view. Hrm. I really want to take a look through the Bushy... Looks like the 15-45 is the only one thats going to have the reticle.

I also wonder how much more expensive the Tactical package for the Busy is going to run. But I'm fairly certain its going to be less than 1500 bucks. Although the proposition of having matching reticles in my scope and spotter is dead sexy!

Re: USO Spotter vs Leupold Spotter

Heck at 4 bills and from Scott thats a no brainer. Scott is a total stand up guy and I've had good experience with him in the past. I've sent an email asking to get put onto the list for one.

Thank you gentlemen for pointing me in the right direction...

Re: USO Spotter vs Leupold Spotter

i've heard people on here describe the USO as a turret-less rifle scope. I agree with this. i have a USO spotter with mpr reticle. i love it, its tough as nails, but after looking through a zeiss diascope, i understand the difference and why people dont call the USO a "spotter."

Re: USO Spotter vs Leupold Spotter

I think that tells me right off that the USO isn't what I'm looking for... I was really enjoying being able to spot trace with the 25X fixed scope that we had a the last shoot. I'm certain that with a lot less FOV that would be nearly impossible to get your eye to track on it properly in that short of an amount of time.

Re: USO Spotter vs Leupold Spotter

the USO is a very robust piece of gear ; a friend has one and its very nice ;

but the eye relief is not to my liking - hard to get a sight picture with it, super finicky if you move your eye ANY you lose the picture

not very technical but the SWEET spot is ridiculously small

IMHO almost unuseable , because its so freaking aggravating

glass is crystal clear - but on a good humid day, at 300 yards it was no better than my leupold mk4 spotter

both were 'performing' the same at distance

field glass or spotting scope ?? whatever

its an optic for the spotter

the bushnell looks intriguing especially for the price

i still think LEUPOLD is the standard for a spotting scope ;

Re: USO Spotter vs Leupold Spotter

force

thanks for clarifying - and it makes sense to me

but seems like semantics ; the use would be the same over time.

on the range or in the field, the optic needs to 'do it all'

just my .02

really i didn't know , so thank you for saying

Re: USO Spotter vs Leupold Spotter

+1 for banshee sws,

The USO I got to check out was a typical USO product meaning that it was extreemly well made and quality was exceptional.

The Leopold though is in my opinion way more useful due to the eye relief and compact design.
This design alows the user to aquire targets significantly quicker.
As contriversial as Leupold can be, I believe this is one of their products that really dominates the market.
Especially now since it has become the standard spotter for the US Army & USMC.
(There are better spotting scopes out there, but not anywhere near their price.)

I love USO, but their spotter is pretty much like others have said, a rifle scope without turrets.

A good comprimise if you are looking for a budget alternative is the aforementioned Bushnell.
I have one of the older (now discontinued) Bushnell Sentry 16-32x50 Spotting Scopes and it was a great way to stretch my budget.
