I am in need of a nice spotting scope.

I am currently looking at the leupold 12-40x60mm model with tmr reticle, or the USO 15-40x60mm model with gap mil reticle.

Any reason I should choose one over the other?

I would like to hear from those running these spotters, what you like and don't like.

Thanks

Re: USO Vs. Leupold spotting scope

My experience with the Leupold folded light path spotters was hit or miss with some being good, others not so much. Have a USO spotter now and absolutely love it.YMMV

Re: USO Vs. Leupold spotting scope

Just got a USO from another hide member. Looks pretty good so far. I've used the Leupold in the past and they aren't bad either. The USO has a lot longer eye relief and is longer in length than the Leupold if that affects your decision.

Re: USO Vs. Leupold spotting scope

I love the US Optics spotters, probably because I have all USO MPP reticles, and spotting with a scope that matches what I am used to seeing all the time is a plus I can get nowhere else.

Re: USO Vs. Leupold spotting scope

Thanks for the replies.

I am actually leaning toward the USO spotter at this point. I got to take a look through one this weekend and I really liked it, plus it is cheaper than the leupold from what I am finding.

One more question, the uso uses the standard attachments found on something like a camera tripod right? One threaded hole with one indexing hole near it?

Re: USO Vs. Leupold spotting scope

I've used both, but bought the Leupold w/TMR reticle. Better eye relief and a sharper image in my opinion. Exit pupil seems larger. Also thought it had easier power and focus adjustment.

A couple of US Optics spotting scopes sitting over at Gunbroker at this minute. Kind of hard to find these scopes...

Re: USO Vs. Leupold spotting scope

I bought a USO Mil GAP spotter used off of the hide about a year ago, and already had a Leupold spotter (no reticle).

I am mostly shooting USO Mil GAP scopes now so it is great to have a matching reticle. I like the eye relief, but I wish the scope had a turret focus adjustment instead of the ERGO type. Even on very solid tripod setups adjusting the ring shakes things up.

Right now I use a Manfrotto X055ProB tripod and a 322RC2 head with the unit and it is about as solid as it gets (and about 9 pounds and too big for the inside of a backpack...). I keep toying with attaching the spotter to a rifle scope since I find sometimes it is difficult to get myself in position behind the scope around 40x.

I ended up keeping both, but I find myself using the USO more. The Leupold is pretty much only doing digiscoping at this point.

Re: USO Vs. Leupold spotting scope

I have had my USO spotter for about 3 months now and its been to 3 matches or so, several range trips and a hike in CO (w/ a small bipod). Its done very well and my only issue is the ERGO focus. If they had it w/ a TPal-like focus, it would be perfect. My spotting calls have really improved with the reticle on there - I'm able to accurately and quickly call out adjustments much better than the spotters w/o reticles.

No experience with the Leupold.

Re: USO Vs. Leupold spotting scope

I just got a US0 spotter. Initial reaction is very good. I took it to the range last Thursday and really liked the clarity and brightness. The ergo focus takes getting used to. It's like you're turning the whole scope.

I also really like the reticle-GAP mil and the compactness of the entire scope. Easy to pop off your tripod and carry in your pack. I will use a Slik for hunting puposes and a Manfrotto for range use.

For the price--worth every penny.

Re: USO Vs. Leupold spotting scope

I just bought the one from Midway to match my US Optics rifle scope. I'll let you guys know how I like it.

By the way, thanks for the heads up on the spotter PSYOPS and I did use the code.

Re: USO Vs. Leupold spotting scope

Used them both side-side along with my Kowa TSN-1.

If you want something compact that matches your riflescope reticle, get the USO.

If you want better color, clarity, image resolution, eye relief/eyebox, get the Lupy.

Once you make the leap to the Lupy being the right spotter of the two, you owe it to yourself to check out the Bushnell variant. It is awesome, independent of the $$, and a total steal in the tactical spotter world.

Re: USO Vs. Leupold spotting scope

I love my USO scopes. The spotter just plain didn't impress me at all. Terribly hard to focus it and just not good enough glass for use as a spotter. I could hardly ever get the ones I had to focus clearly enough. They are impossible to adjust the ERGO without moving it way off your target and the eye relief is very awkward....just a poor design in my opinion and I am a USO fanboy. I have had 2 and sold both. A regular spotter (of decent make) with a reticle is so much clearer, plainer and user friendly than the USO. I use a Meopta TGA 75 with reticle now and it priced about the same as the USO and 100% better for my uses.

Re: USO Vs. Leupold spotting scope

I have a Leupold and like it. Take a look at the Military Channel sniper competition (and training) shows and you'll see a lot of Leupold spotters.

From what I know it was the Brit military that began using Leupold spotters first.

Rugged, compact, bright and clear.

That's well put. It makes a nice observation/ranging optic and in my experience is marginal for anything else.

Re: USO Vs. Leupold spotting scope

I use a LS Mk 4 spotter with the TMR. I'll say i absolutely love it. with an ARD and a bipod my spotter has almost zero reflect signature and a precision call with the TMR. TMR over Mildot is where most people have issues, more mistake with mildots for a inexperienced spotter, easier to all around work with for ranging and leads. Overall, super rugged. flipping it upside down is nice for keeping hidden and having the top of the optic over a backpack or rock pile etc.

havent seen the USO version

What do you mean by this?
