Just found a local place for uspsa matches to fill in some gaps for my long range matches. Been looking to pick up a 1911 anyway so was wondering what you all recommend.

Trying to keep cost to 1500 and under...would like to stay closer to 1k if quality isn't that big of a difference.

    Been looking at:
    Dan wesson pointman
    Dan wesson valor
    Dan wesson specialist
    Kimber tlr (or similar)
Sig scoprion (simply because it would match my p938)

Also been reading/hearing a lot of good things about Rock Island Armory...for the cost i can't imagine it doesn't give anything up to my other choices but what's your experience?

Leaning mostly towards a DW or Kimber...anything else i should consider? Reason to go kimber over dw or vice versa? Would opinion change if i went 9mm instead of 45?

I primarily shoot USPSA as opposed to long range rifle, although admittedly, not in Single Stack, so I don't have a ton of experience to share. One thing I can say for sure, definitely Dan Wesson over Kimber based on reputation alone.

I don't compete, but I shoot an STI Trojan once I shaved the slide lock, it's a damn accurate, reliable pistol. Shoots every brand of 230gr ball I feed it. For $1000, I'd consider adding it to the list.

I shoot single stack and limited in USPSA. All my guns are STIs or custom built on STI parts. In my opinion, an STI Trojan is hard to beat for USPSA single stack without going custom. Dan Wesson’s are nice too but I prefer my STIs. I almost never see Kimbers at USPSA matches and for good reason. They are, in my opinion, significantly overrated, and the series 80 triggers blow.

Whatever you get, consider .40, especially if you load. You can get 10 rounds of .40 in Tripp magazines and have the option to download for minor. 9mm in. 1911 is nice but .40 minor feels like cheating. If you can find an STI Trojan in .40 that is probably your best bet. Consider used too. My Trojan has 15,000-ish rounds through it and is still very tight and smooth.

Get the 1911 you want and whatever it is will be will be fine for uspsa single stack.
I’ve shot some single stack matches for fun but mainly production.

Springfield range officer- worked great. A ton of gun for the money after a few cheap upgrades.
Dan Wesson specialist: nicer gun but shot the same as the range officer.

Of your list the pointman would be really nice and perfect for getting into single stack if you like the aesthetics of it.

    Forget Kimber.
Sig gets good reviews but not going to compare with the DWs and I would rather have a range officer personally.

Caliber is a preference. I shot 45acp (major) but if I did it again I would do 9mm. Mainly for cost and ease, I load quite a bit of 9mm already.

Good to know i haven't felt a recent production kimber trigger but liked an old model a buddy had.

Forgot about the trojan...STI doesn't even list it under their 1911s anymore just the DVC. Plenty on gunbroker though.

Seems like sti and dw are the favorites. Kind of suprised the lack of support your kimber.

I have several Kimbers, along with plenty of 1911s that are in rotation for USPSA in both single stack production as well as limited 10 for those that don't meet the requirements. Based on your choices, I think they will all make decent candidates for local matches. I suggest, whatever you buy, to thoroughly test out your magazines (you'll need a total of five of them) along with mag pouches and holster. Shoot the gun, run it through it's paces, and see if there are any issues that need to be ironed out before the match. The Rock Island 1911s aren't bad for the money, but are no means equal to the others mentioned on your list. I shoot several STIs, I have one for limited, one for carry, and a class gun. Their single stack guns, along with pretty much everything you can find for under or around $1500 will require some minor tweaking from what I've seen to become tailored to you. The common issues are feeding depending on ammo, triggers (most 1911s in that price range will require a trigger job for that "gold standard" 1911 trigger) and then personal preferences , like sights and grips. Some people will also suggest changing out recoil springs based on the type of ammo you plan to shoot for faster lock up, slide timing, recoil management, etc. Either way, I hope you enjoy your time out shooting. A trivial day on the range beats a beautiful day doing yard work or the like.
