Utah Shootouts

Feb. 13, '10
Practical Rifle +
North Springs Shooting Range
Price, Utah
8:30 – 10:00 a.m. Practice and Rifle Clinic, bring extra ammo for this
10:00 – 2:00 Competition, 50 rnds max

Range is covered with ice and snow, should be a good shoot. Dress warm.

As of Feb 1, The 100 yard range is good (covered with snow, but good). 600 and !000 ranges are limited but still can do some paper and steel. The Law Enforcement range is pretty much froze up. If it thaws out by the 13th we will use the turning and running man targets. There is a lot of handgun steel we could shoot.

If it snows any more, we could shoot prone off the top of the shooting benches.

We will just have to wing it (some say I always do that anyway). We will set up whatever is possible the day before and that morning. Might have more fun than normal. Will post scores of each stage but not add them up. Bring your long range rifle and any other firearms you want, help set up any stage you like out to 1000 yards, shoot which stages you want.

New Plan: We will have a practice session or rifle clinic from 8:30 to 10:00 am, which ever you choose. We can help those who have not shot past a few hundred yards or if you are just new to shooting competitions. There is no extra charge for this. Or you can just practice on your own out to 1000 yds.. 10:00 will be match time.

Just pay your $5 range fee to the range office and sign in when you arrive at the range. When you put your name on the match roster you can donate a few bucks to the ammo can.

No AP but no real restrictions on caliber (Good thing they got a welder at the range. I'm always helping weld stuff up again, the targets and stands take quite a beating)

They would probably start making some rules if we started shooting the 200 yard chickens with a 50 BMG.

Haha....Why you asking Later! Are you sure you have anything big enough to get out to 1000Y properly

Clint:
What do you mean by the "1000 yd range is limited"? Are we talking 2 feet of snow and drifts from the burms or just a couple of inches and maybe muddy.

Scott

Re: Utah Shootouts - Feb 13, Rifle Comp +

Scott, there is about a foot of snow covering the whole area, kind of hard crusty stuff. Hard to walk through so setting up much of anything or even painting the steel doesn't seem very practical, except I think the 1000 yd backers are usable, accessible by 4 wheeler along the mud trail they have kept the snow plowed through the winter.

Captain, planning on the second Saturday each month.

Afraid, wasn't sure what I was supposed to be afraid of. From what Chiller explained to me, there's other stuff out there, stuff to be afraid of. Well I guess we will have to ban 20 mm as well as 50 BMG on the 200 yd chickens. And maybe Russ'308 since he admitted to killing the little chicks.

And Steve, you better hope Later doesn't have something in his toy box that can reach Flagstaff from here.

LOL Now Steve you know I would have to "throttle" down some of my stuff to shoot that close

Most likely can use it. Their golf carts ain't much good in the mud and if it snows the night before, they might need their wheelers for plowing it.

I called Scott at the range today. He said the snow isn't melting off, it's building up a few inches every couple days. We'll just have to wait and see what we can shoot or not shoot. I'll have plenty of stuff we can shoot, no matter how deep it can get. (probably between 1 and 2 ft., I don't think it will drift up above the shooting benches like it did 2 years ago)

Wouldn't matter to me to shoot Sundays. I've even told some gun store people that can't ever get off on Saturdays, if they get a few guys together I can just camp out at the range a do a shoot on Sunday too. Nobody ever took me up on that yet.

Re: Utah Shootouts - Feb 13, Rifle Comp +

Got 6 or 8 that said they plan on going so far.

Will be using a sound system to help score the steel. Should be interesting.

Just talked to the guy tonight that is putting together the plan for putting pits in on the 1000 yard line at the North Springs Shooting Range. That will be nice when he gets that project done.

They have some more heaters on the 600-1000 yd sheltered area. You can actually feel heat from them.

All this information - just trying to make it easy on you guys.

Remember there's practice time before the match. 50 rounds max. probably less for the match.

Match will be over at 2:00 for sure cause i got a ccw class starts then.

Won't be doing anything with the turners or movers. Come and shoot what ever distances you can. Will post the scores for each target or stage. If you want to add things up to see who got the most points, you'll have to do that your self.

Re: Utah Shootouts - Feb 13, Rifle Comp +

Hey Clint
I talked to someone the other day and they have been attaching walkie talkies to the back of steel targets and they can hear the hits over the walkie talkie real good. Is that what your going to do?

Re: Utah Shootouts - Feb 13, Rifle Comp +

Kurt, the answer is more or less.

I've been messing with them for about a year now. It hasn't been as easy as a person would think. I can get some ways to work real good. But silly me, I've wanted one set up to work with all steel targets big and small and with all calibers.

Targets that sound like a gong with a ringing sound are easy with a voice activated (VOX) walkie talkie. But shoot that same steel with a lot bigger or smaller caliber and it can sound a lot different. Just a short clank is hard for a VOX to activate soon enough or at the same time too loud and the circuitry can cut out the sound like electronic ear protection does.

Have tried shock activated sensors that activate an alarm, which in turn activates the walkie talkie (works good in case you don't hear the initial impact of the bullet). Those can be set off by a bullet passing by on it's way to another target. On smaller targets and bigger calibers it gets too violent, have shattered a few of those sensors.

Have tried amplifying the receiving walkie talkie and plugging it into my electronic ear protection. That can help. And have tried a few other odd ball things.

Hope that answered your question. If anybody out there has a better way I hope you let me know.

Side Note:
A couple days ago I talked to a rep from Action Targets about their electronic targets. I wanted to see if there were any around here we could see work, because they all have limitations. He said no but they were going to demonstrate one in the next few weeks somewhere around here. He didn't know any more specifics, but said he would let me know when it got set up. Can let anybody know who would like to see this.

Re: Utah Shootouts - Feb 13, Rifle Comp +

Nice sunny day here at the range. Just be careful coming up the west side of the mountain toward soldier summit, it had a lot of ice this morning. The summit and the East side were just wet. Got some fun stuff planned and there won't be much question about the steel getting hit or not.
