Has anybody used the high end UV filters normally used to protect high end camera lenses to double as a protective barrier on your high end scopes? If so, any opinions on pros and cons?

I'd do it in a jiffy if there were filters made to fit the scopes i own... I'd never have a cap on again.
I've tried once or twice and gave up because I found my riflescopes don't have a "standard" camera filter size... not sure about the threads either.
BTW if you do get filter to fit, make sure it's multi-coated and you run it with a hood or you'll get some bad flare.

Sounds good. I have been looking at adorama online. They have a lot of sizes out there. I looked at the local store and none of those fit so I am turning to the Internet dealer.
Depending on your scope, the filters likely wont fit. I know they dont for nightforce because the threading is different.
If you do get a filter, make sure it is a high quality one and multicoated, Good quality filters cost 50-100 dollars depending on the size.
The degradation in image quality will be noticeable with lesser quality filters at longer ranges.
Some high end camera lenses like Canon have sacrificial lenses built in that are not part of the optical forumla when expensive ED glass is used. It would be interesting to see the same features in rifle scopes.
