So my pa-in-law had open heart surgery yesterday at the VA hospital in Gainesville florida. All went very well. Though the building itself is old and dated the staff were great. Updates regularly on surgery as it was happening. Everyone was super nice and very professional.
The wife booked a room at the fisher house on site which is basically a huge house with multiple private rooms for family to stay( if they live more than 50 miles away). It was a very nice place. Didnt cost a thing no matter how long the stay needs to be.
It was sure a relief to see how good everything was despite some of the horror stories we have all heard about.
Pops is doing great, off of iv pain meds as of this morning and sitting in a chair eating. He is in great shape for his age and should be able to live a longer life now with the bypasses

i saw W/W at an air show here in jax right after they started up years back. They had several ( so they said anyways) play boy bunnies there running around clothed. I was hopin it was like a titty bar in that the more money they got the faster the clothes came off. Was sdly dissapointed when it didnt happen. Pretty sure that is the last dealins i had with them cause i knew from then on they weren’t trustworthy

He is pretty tough for 73. Gets up every morning and goes out side. Stays out piddling till about 1:00. Takes a nap and right back at it till dark. Dr said as long as he has been doing these surgeries, pops was #2 that he has done on the in shape list. Super great guy but anal about things almost to a fault. This is last week changing the oil in the wifes car because it was 600 miles over due. I fear that the down time for recovery is gonna be the death of him

Glad to hear everything went well!

I worked there 13 yers ago - while it is still subject to VA rules/regulations it is a good facility and I feel staff much better than average.

Back in 2014 my old man was in the Roseburg Oregon VA off and on til he passed. I was worried about him being in the VA after hearing all those stories. I must say the care he received was top notch. I mean when I asked questions I got answers the staff was really good with my mother who was there all day every day. My Mom volunteered there after he died because she loved the staff so much. Mom is 94 now and has "retired" from being a volunteer but visits Dads grave and stops by twice a week to have coffee with her friends. Good folks there.

Dad was 89 and it was his time. He was a WWII USN Vet. He joined when he was 17. He was a volunteer and always proud of that.

Update on paw in law, he is doing great a few weeks out of surgery, getting rather restless. Yesterday, he wanted to go on the roof and blow it off cause it hasnt been done in a few weeks. Wife and ma in law said nope aint gonna happen. He is doing very well considering other than wanting to get with it a little too soon but thats how he is.

I think thats a problem most men (not just males) have...knowing when to stop and rest. Taking time to really heal from an injury rather than just get to where you can get back to it.

I am slowly learning to say "Fuck it, it'll be there tomorrow, if Im still here tomorrow, Ill finish up then."
