I was shooting the other day and some shots I could see the trail and others I could not. What is the best way to see trace And how do you focus your scope to see it?

Re: vapor trail help

Ive been taught if you are the spotter, dont focus on the target, focus a couple yards infront of the target. As far as being the shooter and watching trace, not sure how that works.

Re: vapor trail help

I focus on the target and then draw the parallax back about 50 - 100 yds. The target is usually just a bit blurry. In this cool clear winter weather we were seeing the actual bullet in the center of the trace this weekend.

Re: vapor trail help

definitely agree with getting the spotter as close the axis of the bore as you can.

mid to lower power setting on spotting scope seems to help me.

Not sure if it makes sense in technical terms, but it helps me not to try to focus too hard at any one spot after calling for the shot.

I have a real hard time picking up the trace as a shooter even at extreme range. Only during perfect conditions

Re: vapor trail help

The best way for me is to be directly behind the shooter. Right in line with his barrel. Don't zoom the spotting scope in super tight. You can focus the scope right on the target. The trick is when you are watching, don't you as the spotter focus on the target. Just kind of be looking through the scope without really look directly at anything. Once you pick it up. You will see it every time.

Here are a few of my examples. Watch it full screen for the best view.
