Re: Velocity from R700 SPS / LTR 20" 308 factory bbl?

is this it? No more users here shooting a 20"

Here is an older article that was done for barrel length and the 308________ This is from part of the article________
During the development of the Tango 51, Tac Ops took a standard 26-inch barrel and cut it down to 18 inches in one-inch increments. Between 10 to 20 rounds were fired at each invrement. They found that a 20-inch barrel provides for a complete propellant burn and no velocity loss when using Federal Match 168-grain BTHP, a cartridge that has become something of a law enforcement standard. Going to an 18-inch barrel only resulted in a loss of 32 feet per second (fps).

Re: Velocity from R700 SPS / LTR 20" 308 factory bbl?

My 20" Savage 10FP, must have a fast barrel as 168gr GMM still clocks 2600. My handloads run 2640 (168gr SMKs over 23gr Varget)

Re: Velocity from R700 SPS / LTR 20" 308 factory bbl?

My 5R is chopped down to 20inches. This is an interesting thread considering I don't have a chronograph. Bump!

Re: Velocity from R700 SPS / LTR 20" 308 factory bbl?

The old LTR shot:

178 AMAX
44.7 Varget
Lapua Brass
FGM 210M
2.8 COAL
2500 ish (Can't remember exact number but it was low 2500s)

Factory Remington Match 168: 2563FPS out of a LTR

Re: Velocity from R700 SPS / LTR 20" 308 factory bbl?

178 amax/175mk
IMR 4064 45.7g
Winchester Brass
CCI250
2650 fps
OAL 2.825
great groups from 100-1000 yards

also a great load the 168s of any flavor is
42g 4064
168
Win brass
CCI 250
2450 fps
This load is responsible for a number of sub .25MOA groups at 100
and has shot well in every 308 rifle I've tried it in.
Its my baseline load when doing load development. If i get a group with it and nothing else I know I need to keep looking.

That's interesting... almost the same setup here with 175 SMKs, win brass, BR2, 45gr Varget, LTR. Average MV around 2650 fps.

Just a note for you guys, I have two SPS T's within 100 SN of eachother. My dads SPS will take another 1.5gr of powder before pressure than mine. His is also alot slower and has a larger chamber. It probably takes his rifle another .7g to get the same speeds that I get. Another thing is his is more acurate and his will also stabilize the 208 amaxes and mine wont. They arn't anything alike, but they both shoot light out.

Nice. Yea for a while I scratched my head hearing from people saying from sps tacticals some stopped at 43.5g's and saw pressure at 45.1g's and some people are poppin out rounds with some 47.5g's.

And to the first quote he could also be shooting in diff temps, altitudes and other variables to cause some of this as well..

Continue... Interesting thread.

BUMP!

Re: Velocity from R700 SPS / LTR 20" 308 factory bbl?

Finally got a chrono and hit the range today.

Stock SPS TAC. Chrono 10 ft from barrel.

My handloads avg 2482 fps. 43.5gr Varget (load data in the .308 loading section)

FGMM avg 2497 fps

Re: Velocity from R700 SPS / LTR 20" 308 factory bbl?

SPS tactical AAC im getting 2550 with 178 amax over varget in new lapua brass.

Re: Velocity from R700 SPS / LTR 20" 308 factory bbl?

Just a note and maybe it matters to the OP or not, but I got similar velocities as are posted here when my SPS Tactical was in stock form. When I went to an aftermarket barrel my velocities went up quite a bit. Granted, I'm shooting a 22" tube now, but I really don't think that 2" will make that much difference.

I went a clocked a bunch of loads this past weekend and these were some of the numbers that I got with all loads in Lapua brass with BR2 primers....

175 SMK 43gr 4064 = 2700 fps
175 SMK 43.5gr RL15 = 2700 fps
155 SMK 45gr RL15 = 2800 fps

Re: Velocity from R700 SPS / LTR 20" 308 factory bbl?

LTR:

44.5 gr Varget
168 SMK

Win. Brass
2.800 OAL
