Rifle Scopes Video Review - Vortex Razor HD 5-20X Pt 1

Re: Video Review - Vortex Razor HD 5-20X Pt 1

Yes I designed and manufacture the action as well as many of the parts associated with the rifle. It is designed the way I would want a rifle to be for hard core applications. I honestly asked Frank if he was going to drop the rifle from the tower with the scope on it. I was a little afraid, yet a little excited to see what would happen.

I had now idea it was going to go through the bomb test!

Passed!

Love that scope review. I'll let these things float around a bit and see how time treats them, but I'm excited about the reticle. Like I said before, it's everything I wish the Horus was....

If it only had an IPHY ranging grid on the side like some of the Horus, I'd agree. I love IPHY for ranging.

me as well, until I'm at a comp and they say "there's 10 IPSC targets over there, you have 30 minutes to range them within 10% using only your reticle and data book".............

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Dsparil</div><div class="ubbcode-body">hey LL how about a drop-test similar to what you did with the hensoldt?</div></div>

Why ?

What is the difference between dropping the whole rifle with the scope attached, as opposed to dropping just the scope and blowing it up twice ?

I think I damaged tested it better than most. It's a solid optic. More expensive scopes have suffered less and failed more.

Actually the bomb test kinda beats the Hensoldt's drop, you get immediate acceleration and a stop, where the drop you just get a stop.

Re: Video Review - Vortex Razor HD 5-20X Pt 1

The bomb test is great! I did cringe a little when it went off and the rifle took a dive. I think Vortex is headed in the right direction with this scope and its on my list of things to buy in the near future.

</div></div>

I didn't mean to imply that I thought it was a bad scope. I just had a very specific goal for any change I made and I was hoping this might be way to do it because I really like most of the quantitative aspects of the scope (mag range to size ratio, knob form factor, reticle, magnification ring, HD glass, etc.) But if the specific thing I was hoping to upgrade was at least notable enough that you'd mention it as a weakness in the scope then it probably isn't going to be the upgrade I was hoping for.

Having that info in the review was very useful to me. Now I can sit back and wait to find one used to try at some point in the future rather than further pissing off the wife by pre-ordering a new one ASAP.

ETA: On the down side, now the Hendsoldt at nearly twice the price is looking ever so appealing again...

Re: Video Review - Vortex Razor HD 5-20X Pt 1

Zero Stop adjustments, the fact that when you loosen the locks and then have to dial the reticle to the impact without the aid of any clicks.

Frank is it that there are no clicks between adjustments. Let's say your at 2 mil and want to come up another 1.5. Is there a way to count or do you have to look at the turret.

Re: Video Review - Vortex Razor HD 5-20X Pt 1

edpmedic,

When you are sighting the scope in and setting the zero stop there are no clicks. I imagine this will be somewhat of a personal preference thing, but personally I don't think it is a very big deal, and in fact allows the user to fine tune elevation zero between clicks.

Once you are zeroed and lock the zero stop, clicks return to normal.

yup thats what I did. I was able to adjust the elevation to the .05 mil and get the bullet impact in the reticle window at 200yds

Re: Video Review - Vortex Razor HD 5-20X Pt 1

I don't really shoot groups except to zero a rifle and I do have some footage of it, however we felt shooting it across the course from 300 to 1000 yards was a better reading rather than shooting at 100 yards which can hide errors within the group.

The targets shot range from Larue's to our 9X15 plates which we shoot out to 1000 yards. But I have a bunch of footage, the groups at 100 yards, not so much... it's a waste of time in my opinion.

Needless to say, nothing changed from one day to the next, dope was the same and hit on the first round. The day before leaving I shot the rifle again at 300 to 1000 and never went back to re-torque or change anything and again, it shot the same, hit consistently and accurately across the course.

Re: Video Review - Vortex Razor HD 5-20X Pt 1

Sounds like a really nice scope. I shoot groups at 200 yds when I am working on load development, always over a chrono. When I find something promising then the real proof comes at 600-1000 yds. This is with a 308 GAP Crusader and S&B 4-16x50mm which I won't be replacing anytime soon.

Hunter223 - how's the scope working - you've had it for a bit now? I still haven't "pulled the trigger" on the vortex or premier yet... thanks for the pics though. The video on here was good to watch too!

Sorry just saw this. I'm REALLY liking it more and more everytime I go out and shoot it. I havent really found any weak points or things to complain about. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to buy top-end glass. the glass is right there with the big boys ie; S&B.

Re: Video Review - Vortex Razor HD 5-20X Pt 1

Here is a second video, I thought I some better footage, but honestly it wasn't as good as I hoped, this is really just a cleaner version, and a bit more polished, so hopefully it doesn't disappoint. One of the down sides to rushing footage to production.

But it's good, just different, honestly I should just re-cut the first one to include this footage and make a single polished version.

Re: Video Review - Vortex Razor HD 5-20X Pt 1

So out of curiosity where are these made? Vortex is a US company but and it appears they have some of their product line being made overseas. Whats the story with these all made overseas or are they assembled here from oversea parts or (and this would be nice) are they entirely made here?

Re: Video Review - Vortex Razor HD 5-20X Pt 1

Resurrecting this thread too. Lowlight, could you tell what reticle you tested - EBR-2 or EBR-3? And if EBR-3 - what did you think of its 0.1 mrad subtentions? How clear were they?

Thanks!
