Hey all,

I currently run a 20 moa canted dual dovetail setup with a 42mm Nikon Monarch and a gentleman here on the hide offered to trade me for his Viper PST 4-16 FFP plus cash.

I'm thinking about taking off the dual dovetail setup and going all aluminum EGW 20 moa rail. They're only like $36 on Optics Planet so are they any good? Seems they also offer an HD version for like $30 more.

And for the rings I was looking at these possibly:

http://www.opticsplanet.net/weaver-four-hole-skeleton-ring-weaver-1-30mm-rings.html

http://www.opticsplanet.net/weaver-1-30mm-tactical-ring-6-hole-picatinny.html

Are those any good? How about the Burris Xtreme Tactical line?

If I could afford quality rings like NF I would but right now I cannot.

Not sure if my logic is correct, but that 20moa base is going to get me +6mils of adjustment on the Viper PST, which has 19mils of internal travel (total = around 15.5 mils from zero, right??).

This will be my first mil/mil scope so go easy on me as I'm trying to learn the system.

I *think* I'll have 15.5 mils of travel from zero, thus allowing my .308 to reach out to 1000 yards if I want to take it that far.

Sound right or did I fuck all that up?

Re: Viper PST setup with 20 moa rail setup questions

Those rings and base will serve you fine. you can upgrade later. I run Burris ex. rings and egw on a couple of guns and seeking rings and high end bases on others. never had a prob. with either.

Re: Viper PST setup with 20 moa rail setup questions

Can I get away with the Medium rings for a 50mm obj. with Butler Creek caps on a R700 Varmint barrel contour? Not sure how the 20moa cant may affect that...

Hate to get them and send them back because they're the wrong size.

Re: Viper PST setup with 20 moa rail setup questions

With the $35 Egw rail you should be able to run low weaver or Burris rings.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong; I don't have this exact setup but have messed with similar.

Mathematically you are correct, but it rarely ever works out this way. There are too many variables that have input on the outcome. Such as scope over bore height, How true the action mounting surface is,bore curvature, etc..... There are just too many tolerances stacked up to allow this to work out this way everytime. Sometimes it does, sometimes you end up with more than you expect, and sometimes you get less.

So to answer your questions, yes you are on the right track and the products you mentioned should work fine. As far as ring height goes you will need a ring that is around the .090" or higher range.

I think your logic is right. I'm using the same scope, PST 4-16 FFP on a Larue 20 moa base with cheapy Blackhawk tactical low rings. Rifle is a remmy 700 in 308. Height above bore is a pube hair under 2". With a 100 yard zero, I have 15.2 mils of elevation travel left. More than enough for the limits of my rig.
