Im a new "long ranger" I shoot .308 (for now) 1/10 twist 24"
I'm loading Amax 178gr's but at this point only out to 400yds.

I just put a Mark 4 on my rifle and learning to use it.

SO the question is past 400yds what is a better bullet between the VLD and Amax.

I intend to hunt longer range and those are the two I'm stuck between.

Thanks in advance.

Re: VLD vs A-MAX ???

It depends on how far is long range for you. Out to 600 ish i dont think there is enough differance to worry about between the two. After i think the vld has an advantage.

Re: VLD vs A-MAX ???

IMO the VLD is a "better" bullet, however It can be trickier to get shooting right due to seating depth and imo requires very little bullet runout. The Amax on the other hand is easier.

So its up to you.

Re: VLD vs A-MAX ???

Given a choice, I will choose the A-max every time. They are easier to get to shoot well for me and they are cheaper. For me, the few points I might pick up in BC isn't worth the extra time and barrel wear setting up the VLD's.

Re: VLD vs A-MAX ???

If your hunting, you probably want to use your magazine,
And vld's often like to be loaded too long for mags..
Not ALWAYS, but often enough to choose the amax's first and save time/money on vld development only to find you have to single feed them..

Re: VLD vs A-MAX ???

If you are looking to hunt at longer ranges you might want to try out the Hornady 165grn SST. It's a purpose built hunting bullet but is also very accurate.

For paper and steel look at the 178 BTHP from Hornady as well as the other two you are looking at. The 178 BTHP has a .530 BC and has been very accurate out of my rifle.

+1 on the 178 BTHP, it will replace the 175 SMK in my rfle
