Rifle Scopes Vortex 6.5-20x44 - Tunnel Effect?

Hi Folks,

I've tried reading through the threads on here and other sites looking for information about a so-called "tunnel effect" that some reviewers have noted in Vortex scopes, but apart from the mention in a couple of reviews (not on this site) I haven't been able to learn anything more about it...

I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a 6.5-20x44 Viper and was just curious if that is an issue with older models, or just an issue of perception on the part of the couple of reviewers that noted it.

I don't have a lot of experience with optics, having only owned a single 3-9x50 Rifleman (Leupold) before now, so I wonder if I'm just getting concerned about something which isn't an issue in the field as far as "tunnel effect" is concerned.

My other choice is the Sightron SII BS 3-9x42, but I've read enough positive comments about Vortex that I really *want* to buy one of them - also, they're here in WI so I wouldn't mind being able to throw a little business to a local company.

Any Vortex owners care to comment? I'm a bit OCD when it comes to visual problems / artifacts, etc. in scopes, but am trying to limit this particular purchase to around the $400 mark so I'd just like to be sure I'm getting the best combination of optical quality and features for that price point... it seems like the Vortex Viper is perfect, but I'd really appreciate any informed opinions from folks who already have one.

Thanks!

Love mine. Sits on a custom .308 SPS Tac.

I've talked it up so much my dad and brother both bought one.

No problems whatsoever, tunneling, artifacts, etc.

It's been a pleasure to use.

Great glass for the $$.

IMO, you can't find a better optic at the price point, and probably for a couple/few hundo more for that matter.

I imagine most experiences you encounter here will be positive, but I'm interested to read folks' feedback w/said Viper.

Try one and see if you like it and for some reason it doesnt work out for you let us know and we will do whatever is necessary to make it right.

You aren't going to get this from many companies!

This is exactly why every time I talk to someone who doesn't know about Vortex or has heard but has little/no experience w/them, I tell them to check them out.

Hi Scott, All:

Thanks for the replies - just placed an order for a 6.5-20x50 and looking forward to getting a chance to take it out in the field. Turns out the so-called "tunnel effect" a couple of reviewers had been talking about is what I tend to think of as a perfectly normal scope, so I guess this is just a matter of perspective (err, pardon the pun).

Anyway, I'm looking forward to it.

I can vouch for Scot at Vortex, he is great to work with. Just helped me this morning with an issue I had. Vortex corrected the issue without even batting an eye
