Im deciding on a scope for my 6.5CM Ruger RPR with 24" LRI barrel. Max I would ever shoot would be 1000 yards. Most of the time it would plinking steel and occasionally maybe hunting. Ive narrowed it down to the Razor G2 4.5-27x or the Nightforce ATACR F1 4-16x. With all the discounts out there, price is about the same. (the NF F1 5-25x is out of my price range unless a good used deal pops up).

The Razor obviously has the advantage in magnification but the NF has the weight and size advantage. I'm assuming the glass is about the same? Does either one really have any other advantage over the other or is it just a personal preference in reticles? Will 16x be enough for 1000 yards?

thanks

That RPR is already going to be a pig of a rifle anyway. The size and weight difference between the two optics will be inconsequential. Were it me, I would go with the higher mag optic for your stated purposes. If you were putting together a smaller, lighter, dedicated hunting rifle, I would for sure suggest the NF. In your case, go with the Vortex.

FWIW used 5-25 ATACR's show up in the PX regularly. Keep your eyes open and you'll find a good deal. All depends on how patient you are.

Last time I purchased a scope, I had the same dilemma. Both are exceptional optics. I went with Vortex because of the reviews I've read on multiple sites about warranty. Both have good reviews, but Vortex was said to have a week or two turnaround on warranty work and NF was at 5-6 months at that time. People also claimed world-class customer service with Vortex. I made a great decision with Vortex, but I would say that certainly, you cannot go wrong with either. If you went nightforce though, I would definitely want the 5-25x. Just my .02. Good luck!

It is a precision rifle not a 6 pound mountain rifle, the little extra weight with increased magnification is a big plus. You don't always need 27 power but it is there if you need it.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I will go with the Vortex unless I find a good deal on the NF F1 5-25.

I own several NF and have never owned a Razor, but given your parameters, I'd make the same choice. On a side note, i recently sent a NXS to NF for a reticle swap and had it back in 18 days.

Post pics when you get it finished.

If you don't mind me asking what did a reticle swap cost ya? I've got an nsx sitting around that I'd like to change.

Don't quote me but $340-ish. I'd call NF and run it past them what you want. Depending on the model, some reticle swaps might not be possible.
