Looking for a semi budget scope for an AR that will do 400-500 yards all day with the occasional 600+ run someday in the distant future when its not 120 degrees out and I have the patience for it. More or less its going to be a paper plinker and I just want something decent.

Previously ive had Zeiss, Leupold Mark 4 LRTs, and some cheapies and havent had a chance to try Vortex. From the hours of reading on here ive come to the conclusion that most of you say for the money, Vortex is unbeatable, but compared to higher end optics, the leupold has clearer glass. Heres my issue is with my LEO pricing, the leupold Mark 4 LRT scopes are about $300 more than the Viper PSTs, and 450-500 more than the midway model, but the Leupold Target model is only $50 more and has similar features. I dont need the illumination, the warranty really doesnt concern me because as I said, its going to more than likely be a bench gun with the occasional desert trip when it cools off, but that being said, id like to get the best I can get for the budget I want to spend. I looked at the Mark AR scopes but they seem a bit cheap to me and I prefer the 30mm tube. Not really interested in any other brands at this time as I get the best deals on these (I get a fair amount off the Viper PST scopes as well, but for $200 less I get the midway version)

Now for those who have tried the midway scopes AND the Viper PSTs, is there that big of a difference where I should go to the PST? unfortunately if I go to the PST, then the Mark 4 LRT 50mm scopes really arent much more, then I start going off into the $900+ range again when I was hoping to stay under $600.

If anyone has a review I missed, im very interested, I just dont seem to see anyone using the Mark 4 Target models.

I think you'll find that the Mark 4 scopes are severely limited by their MOA based turrets, especially since their "ranging" reticles are in mRads (mildot and TMR). Leupold is a good brand, but they seem to be reluctant to change. I think you'll find other companies produce equally good scopes in the price range, but with features that Leupold doesn't have.

You won't lose much by going with the HS 5-15x over the PST's. Mostly just illumination and a nicer, glass etched reticle. In terms of value, the HS beats the SFP PST. The HS really can't be compared to the FFP PST. At that point, it really depends what you want in a scope.

Well went to sportsmans today to look... they just happen to have all the scopes I wanted to see in stock!

Looked at the Viper HS, Viper PST, Leupold Mark LRT Target and Mark LRT 50mm.

honestly at low magnification they look very similar with the leupold MAYBE having a slight edge. I was looking at objects roughly 50-60 yards away at the other end of the store. Cranked them both up to max magnification, and the leupold had a significant edge in clarity where as the Viper PST and HS looked very cloudy at anything above 12x. with the Leupold, I was easily reading the price labels on the backpacks on the far wall and it was crystal clear. With the Viper, I could still see the tag clearly, but it definitely lacked the brightness of the leupold. I really couldnt see much of a difference between the PST and HS to warrant the cost difference, and on the leupolds, the 50mm was nicer than the target because of field of view.

With all this being said, I may just get a 3-9 or 3.5-10x scope instead and save a few bucks because for a 300-500 yard gun I dont think I need the 16x magnification, but we will see if I can find any good sales.

If you need to have ffp, then pst. Otherwise the midway HS are pretty darn good scopes for the price.

Again if ffp is a must, you should also check out the bushnell dmr g2.

I failed. Ordered a Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 4.5-14x50 with mil dots. I couldnt decide on a "cheaper" scope so I said screw it and ordered one I know I will like
