Re: vortex monoculars??

that's good enough for me....

been thinking about one and it looks like I won the $50 certificate in the smack the smiley comp---thanks JB and SWFA! So, I think I will be ordering the 10x36 model as soon as the certificate shows up

We monkeyed with one at shot at the OTIS party that had a camera adapter. It was Bad Ass. They are light, easy to carry, and well built! Highly Recommended.

Re: vortex monoculars??

I'm not 100% certain of the optical technicalities of what comprises a monocular vs a scope, but maybe worth mentioning there are the Recon spotters, and the little Solo monoculars. Both great products but of substantial differences in design, quality and price. I think LL is referring to the Recon Tactical spotters.

Re: vortex monoculars??

I am talking about the tactical Recon Spotters, the monoculars they have. I am not going to get to the review, I have to leave tomorrow and there just wasn't enough time to get to everything I wanted to in the short amount of time I had.

Re: vortex monoculars??

Chris,

I went with the 10X Recon because I don't like going too high power on "hand-held" optics (I like 7X binos). Calling hits on steel/berm works fine hand-held, but I could not see holes in paper targets at 100 yards without using the tri-pod.

If you're going to use it like binoculars, lower power is probably better. If you're going to use it mostly like a spotting scope (tri-pod/supported), the 15X might be a better fit.

Sometimes I wish I'd have ordered the 15X, but I don't regret getting the 10X, it will do what I got it for - spotting shots on paper out to a couple hundred yards when shooting non-scoped rifles, hunting, and observing.

It's basically a riflescope design, so don't expect it to perform like a 20-60X80 ED Pentax. It's just handier and can be used more places than a scoped rifle....

Just my $.02, it's your decision so don't blame me if you have second thoughts.

I would like to see a Vortex Tactical Condom

But on a serious note, since all my scopes are MOA based i would like the option of an MOA ranging reticle on the spotters or the Viper binoculars.

That would put Trojan out of business....

Re: vortex monoculars??

They are mils. Keep in mind that these are fixed power and the FOV's on fixed power optics without an erector tube are quite a bit larger than zoom riflescopes that have an erector tube in them.

Also, the reticles are off center. This allows the subject to be bracketed by the reticle for measurement, rather than having to move the subject to one of the four quadrants for measurement (and thus out of the "sweet spot" of the optics).

This means that you will get more mils for measurement on the fine section of the cross hair, since they are longer.

Re: vortex monoculars??

Sam- Is that picture of the Recon reticle from the 10x or the 15x? As the mil markings go all the way to the edge of the FOV I would think you would have a slightly different reticle in each.

Re: vortex monoculars??

I'm pretty sure that's the 10x Recon, but I will double check tomorrow when I'm back at the office.

You are correct that the reticles are slightly different between the 10x and 15x, due to the FOV. I believe that the 15x only goes out to 36mils on the fine cross hair section.
