I am getting a 20" M1A Loaded in a EBR chassis soon and so I am starting the scope shopping. I know these things aren't the most precise shooters (if I wanted that I would have gone with a bolt gun or a GAP-10) but I want to get some decent optics on there and do some shooting out to 500 yards with it.

My first two options were the following:

Vortex viper pst 2.5-10x44

Vortex HS-T 4-16x44

I know there are a million options out there. Vortex has been awesome for me to deal with and I have several of their other options on my ARs, 338 Lapua, etc. Just wondering if some of you have experience with M1As and would recommend one of the two above or something else. Is the 10x enough magnification or should I go with something a little bigger like the HS-T?

I am looking to stick in the $400-750 price range as it may be.

You can find Leupold M3 3.5-10 scopes for 600-700 used all the time, that is what I have on my loaded model and it works very well. The Vortex 2.5-10x32 is a very nice little scope but the eyebox and field of view are narrow. I shoot just fine with it but others who have used it didn't like that and if it were mounted on my M1A I think it would be hard to get behind.

I knows its not the most popular but my IOR 2.5 X 10 FFP illuminated has performed well on my "other" rifle so I did a Chinese fire-drill of scopes and it ended up on my EBR.

(Its in a Bassett mount)
