I'm new to long range shooting and looking for my first good scope. tight budget like so many these days. however i have my hart set on a vortex pst ffp. either size and mil/moa. although mil/mil interests me becouse i've never done it. my plan is to put it on my 22 savage mark II tr to train and learn all the scope's functions. but now i'm looking at a 700 sps 308 with a pst scope for a good price. which brings me to two questions now.

1. what if any changes/improvements have been made to the pst scopes? new eye box perhaps.(wondering what i might miss out on by buying an older used one. and how can i tell if it has any updates.)

2. any chance a quick release mount would hold zero between my 22 and future 308? ( in a perfect world it would and i could zero and set the turret stop on the 308 at 100 yrds. and have just enough under rotation to find 50 yrds on the 22.)
any body tried this? any input would be great. if you have used quick release with success brands, rough price, and stores would be of help.
struggling to find much more than a $1000. dollars for 1 scope rings etc., deffinately cant get 2. but for $400. more i can get a rem 700 308,rings,base,and harris bipod. it just seems like the right thing to do. other bills optional

Re: vortex pst ?

Lots LOTS of threads on the PST of both flavors. We have two 4-16x50 PST FFP MOA/MOA on our LR handguns and other than an occasional paint fleck floating around inside them they are one heck of a scope for the money. The pistols have a harsher recoil than even the larger caliber rifles and are holding up great.

We used to use an adjustable VGM mount on them and we had to take the scopes off to tweak adjustments to the mount and reinstall it and it'd be nuts on with the adjustment made to the mount. I'd not be afraid to take it off and reinstall it in a match and feel pretty darn comfortable about it still being on target out thru 1000 yards. We still have Leupold QRW rings on the scopes even though we aren't using the adjustable mounts anymore. They've served their purpose well so I didn't change them when I switched over to the PST scopes after ditching the pistol scopes. There might be better rings but the Leupold QRW seem to be great about remounting and holding their zero well.

About switching between two guns, unless you are very lucky I kinda doubt they would just switch straight over. Chances might be pretty good the windage will be off and it'd get confusing remembering which elevation settings you used on each gun. I think you'd get frustrated using it that way. Maybe start off with it on the 22LR then switch over to the 308 later and get another scope for the 22. Be a neat experiment to try and see just how close it works out for ya.

Re: vortex pst ?

If your new to shooting in general go with the .22, PST combo, shoot the hell out of it and learn the fundamentals.
Then down the road when you can afford it get the .308 and move the PST over to it and get a cheaper optic that will work the .22.
Switching between the two isn't really a good practical option.

Its not only the cost of optics and rifles but the cost of ammo to learn with and that's where the .22 will help you get more range time at an affordable level.

As for the PST's they're still the same. I believe the Razor's had a ocular change but I don't believe it affected the PST line.
Remember if you buy used and there ever is an issue that Vortex's warranty transfers and it truly does kick ass !

Good luck !
